Why med school sucks...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What is the secret to not thinking that sitting in a vat of alcohol with the top layer of skin removed while taking the MCAT and having your eyes pecked would be better to anatomy?

Anatomy just blows.......it will end eventually.

That's the only comfort there is really 😉

Just when I think I might not hate so much anatomy I realize that I do indeed hate anatomy that much.

You have a year long course? I forget that other schools are that way. Ours is only a semester long. Done and done! 😀

We are just a semester... only ours is Jan - May.

I have to disagree. Med school sucks because every class makes me feel that way.

The Stekster had better take it a little easier on us on the Neuro exam than he did in Phys. He may as well have been writing his questions in hieroglyphics.

My thoughts on this semester can be summed up in one short story. Last semester, and even early this semester, I was unsure whether I wanted to participate in the Dog Lab due to ethical concerns about the treatment of the animals (mind you, I'm no PETA nut). After about 5 weeks of Neuro and Phys, I am not only going into the lab with no reservations, but I was joking with my buddies yesterday that it would be great if they would just give us the OK to try random surgical procedures on the animals while we were in there already. Heart transplant surgery in residency? Yeah, no problem...I did one during my M1 year.

In short, I fear our classes are driving me to animal abuse.

Well can't say I feel your pain since I looooved anatomy and miss it. However, Biochemistry was my own individual hell so I can relate 🙂 Sooo glad that was over, this semester I hate cellbio/Histo.

extremely dumb. since when does being a physician involve knowing irrelevant minutia about the insertions of hundreds of muscles into particular grooves on bones?

(I hated anatomy too... 2nd year is better, i promise!)

Would it be dumb to ask why a person that hates studying anatomy would want to be a physician?

you will understand once you get to med school.

Cool...thanks!
Wow, I can't tell if that's sarcasm or not. How sad is that? If it were me, it'd definitely be sarcasm. Then again, if it were me, I wouldn't have asked the question.

Hilarious :^) It's definitely hard to tell online. Especially when someone uses really *good* sarcasm, to the point where you can't tell until you read the post a second or third time, and realize the person was either being really earnest, or pretty darn sharp.

Not sarcasm...just struck me as odd that someone who wants to to be an expert on the human body would "hate" studying it. 🙂

If a person says I will understand better once I'm there...I'm good with that. However, I'm hoping to attend a school where everything is integrated and "makes sense". Nothing annoys me more than being asked to know something that I view as completely irrelevant, so I think I can sympathize with the plight of this person, if I'm understanding the situation correctly.

That being said, I guarantee med school doesn't suck as much as my job does!

Ahh, you have much to learn grasshopper. Anyway, planning on going to KCUMB? Consider MU as well. PM me with questions, I know Joe town quite well.

  Prepare to be annoyed often then

I think the grass truly always is "greener" on the other side of the fence...because this is the second time this week I've heard from Med Students how bad it sucks...but I can't imagine anything sucking more than what I do right now. 🙂

At this point, KCUMB and MU way ahead of everyone else...I'm a KS boy at heart, but have a negative impression of KUMed to this point.

If you are out of state, it takes an act of congress to get accepted at KU.

When you say "alcohol", what type of alcohol do you mean?

Anatomy is one of those subjects that people either love or hate. Kinda like bootcamp. Its not really difficult. But its a lot of material and most people never had it before. Also you can't study anatomy like you do other subjects, b/c its basically just memorizing where things are located in the body. If you have good visual memory you will crush anatomy. But it can be very fun especially once you get somewhat proficient at it. Its a flip of the coin, some people like it, some like megafoyl can't wait another minute for it to be over. Whatever tickles your pickle I guess.

I actually dont hate studying anatomy. I hate that I am so lousy at studying anatomy.

unfortunatly rubbing alcohol.
However I have found that ethyl alcohol in large quantities has improved my outlook on anatomy.

Actually anatomy becomes even more frustrating when you have a love/hate relationship with it. The visual stuff and the clinical correlates are great. Its the learning a new language but not having the preformed images in your head of the concepts that go along with the new language that's killing me. 🙁 😡
