Why not wait and review applications later?

I wonder why dental schools don't wait and review applications later in the year. Perhaps they could accept them starting in May but start to review them in September or so. This way, late DATers (i.e. August), such as myself, will have an equal chance at getting accepted. I think that dental schools will benefit because they can review a much larger applicant pool with more competitive gpas and scores, as opposed to simply reviewing and accepting applications on the fly as they come in.

Any opinions on why this is?

First Aug is not that late. Just make sure your app. is in well before you take the DAT.
Schools work on a rolling enrolement; late applicants get a shot too.
No matter when they start accepting applications, some will always procrastinate and apply late. Those who prepare and are ready to apply should not be penalized to make it "fair". The early bird gets the worm.
I applied in June and took the DAT in Aug and got several interviews and acceptances early. RELAX

it is more efficient for the schools to do them a few at a time as they come in rather than trying to look at thousands all at once. the schools do not miss out because generally people with great stats are the types that will apply very early anyway. and as to it being fair to applicants... i think it is quite fair that those who made the effort to get their stuff in early would get looked at first.

Oh I'm quite relaxed. I'm just curious why they don't review them later to eliminate the "early bird." But I guess it does make it easier for adcoms to review applications. Still, it would be nice if I could just send my apps in November or something 😛

since you cant change the adcoms methods , why dont you just adjust and take the DAT earlier?

Think about what you're saying here. It's the same as "Why does my boss look at the clock when I come in, realize I am late, then proceeds to write up a warning. Why doesn't he make the standard of late after I come in to make it fair for me. That way it isn't as bad for me when everyone comes in early." It isn't fair to make everyone who applies early to wait to make it fair for everyone else. Life is a cut throat situation sometimes and if you want to get in then you have to be prepared. Like Biogirl361 said, those with good stats are the ones who get apps in early because they are prepared.

I thought August DATs weren't that late? I just thought it would be nice to have the summer to fill out applications 😛

I'm just asking why it has to be this way. They could make the process more like undergrad college applications process: take all applications, select the top few, interview those, accept some and then accept another batch of applications in a second cycle.

I guess it's just because they want to further confuse people. Why do they do anything the way they do?

i'm sure you wouldn't be saying the same thing if you had applied early..

Most schools DO start reviewing applications for interviews in August or September. Traditionally it's nearly impossible to think about interviewing when the new incoming class isn't yet situated.

Prior to August or September, many schools will send out secondaries and review your AADSAS application for general cut-offs, but I'd still say the vast bulk of reviewing of applications occurs in August/September of later.

Having said that, schools STILL operate on a rolling basis, so even if they do set aside the applications, the ones they review first will be the ones they received first.

This much I can promise you, schools aren't reviewing applications in May or June or July. It doesn't matter if they've received them from AADSAS or not, it just isn't going to happen that early.

a few schools do start reviewing basically as soon as the applications come in from aadsas- for example I got my interview invitation to CASE in early/mid july, so they must have reviewed my application sometime in late june. I think they are the exception rather than the norm though.

Dental schools also start accepting people sooner than the other schools... 🙄
