Why the GRE deadline?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Cuz people would always be saying "can I have one more day" There has to be a cut off at some point so that schools can start to sort applications. Plus...it keeps people for procrastinating too long... no "well, they said by the 31st, but it's ok if I take it after that..it'll only be a few days late". So, yes, it's a pain in the butt, but it's for your own good and so they can get the admissions process rolling!

For Illinois specifically, There was supposed to be a change over in the GRE. That change was supposed to take effect in September. To keep tests consistent, they had the Aug 31st cut off. When ETS decided to scrap the change, U of I decided to keep the Aug 31st deadline for this year. Other schools decided to extend their deadlines to their usual scheduled dates. Illinois should be back to a later date for next year, if ETS doesn't decide to change the test again.
