For the "why _____ med school" question, should we be focusing on aspects of their curriculum, or things like their commitment to community service/research/policy/etc? Or is a combination appropriate?

You should be addressing why you want to go there. If it happens to be one of the things you mentioned, then bring it up.

I think a good way as well would be to search and see if any alumni of the school did amazing things...you can build off of that.
