I am sorry for making this so repetitive.

But it seems that 16 people would choose UC Irvine over Columbia and I am just wondering why they would do that? Especially when tuition would not be a HUGe factor..but it might be a small one since the grants I got are not necessarily refundable all four years (from columbia).

ANyone else feel free to chime in too...

Because your girlfriend can keep tabs on you!!!!

women and weather. those are the only two i can come up with and i'd still take columbia.

Family! If you already have a relationship here in CA, that'll fall apart, almost guaranteed. Then you're going to develop one in New York and you'll probably end up staying in New York or your spouse will have to give up her family to come to CA, either way your kids will suffer because they won't get to see both sets of grandparents on a regular basis.

Oh, and weather, totally. Further, Irvine is a whole lot safer and prettier. There are actual plants and grass ALL over the Irvine campus. There's also a really nice swamp. You have space there, it's not so totally cramped. There are so many more important things than academics to consider in this decision. You're going to be a doctor no matter what, try to get that MD in the least stressful, most pleasurable environment.

it seems that all these people are really choosing california over new york as opposed to uc irvine over columbia.

i'd be interested to hear the reasons people are actually choosing one school over the other.

🙂

I personally think the location is much more important than the school. Medical school curriculums must be standardized. Medical school locations are definitely not.

Go to Columbia. It will give you a lot more opportunities down the road.

Scooby,

I remember you said somewhere you've been placed on the UCI alternate list. Did ya get in off the list? I'm curious about its movement..

columbia...

You'll get to see way more cases of late stage disease, as well as a broader experience in your clinical rotations. another plus about columbia is that the school is pretty much in the hospital. the main thing i didn't like about irvine was that you had to drive 20 minutes or so to the medical center. i don't think orange county can provide what nyc can, clinially speaking.

Yes, Irvine has nicer weather and is 'safer', but I think I would choose Columbia anyway.

I'm only on the Columbia waitlist and so it's really not mine to say, but I would go to UCI over Columbia mainly becuase of the money and the limits the debt would pose on my life. Also, I've done grad school far away and have had my adventures. Plus my family, which I have been away from and bf is here. HOWEVER, if I were Scooby with nice grants, no girlfriend, and no experience away from Cali, I would go to Columbia in a heartbeat. I, too, think that the clinical experience in NYC vs. OC will be superior. I don't think training in OC will hurt, but if all else is equal... The long distance relationship thing is really rough, though... especially in Medical school.
