The original reference quotes a divorce rate for psychiatrists at 51%. This is generally the number given for the general population (ref: divorcereform.org).

Why are the other specialities so dissimilar compared to the general population? Makes the second comment quite apropos.

Perhaps familiarity does in fact breed contempt. Is the 110-hour work week the solution for marital woes? 😉

Did anyone notice the graduating years on which this study was based?
1948 through 1964! These folks are now retirement age and older.

This represents an ENTIRELY different societal culture, medical culture, and psychiatric culture. I would really NOT generalize these findings to the current world.

ah, if only... but that doesn't explain why surgeons have the 2nd highest medical divorce rate, nor why dermatologists or other cushy specialties aren't as high... or are they? psychdoc did point out the age of the study being a huge factor, and i believe it was further limited to hopkins physicians at that. but one still has to wonder if this phenomenon wasn't related to the personality of the typical psych doctor.
