Technology Wifi vs. Cell Phone Internet

I want something to check email and keep track of interviews on the trail. I'm only just getting started with interviews and I'm convinced it would be useful. lol

I am just wondering if anyone can offer some opinions on whether to get something that works over WIFI (like iPod touch - might as well get something I like) or something like a blackberry. Do most places have public wifi?
