like the thread title says...i'm interested in wildlife medicine and am wondering what opportunities are available at certain schools -- mississippi and western in particular.
(
well, i'm not sure if this has been discussed to death somewhere else, cause i'm fairly new around here, but i thought i'd give it a shot...)

Mississippi State's vet school, at this point, offers almost no exposure or experience with wildlife. Of course we learn about wildlife diseases and such in class, but the actual school's animal hospital recently stopped treating wildlife at all. Those of us in the Wildlife, Exotics, Zoo, and Aquatics club signed up to take in orphaned wildlife this spring, but aside from our club, there is not much wildlife exposure!

You do tailor your fourth-year to wherever your interests lie, so you could take courses and participate in externships all over the country or world at that point and focus on wildlife.

I know a lot of the undergrad students here are very involved in wildlife rehabilitation and such, and some people in my class that went here for undergrad are still heavily involved, so there are opportunities, just not through the CVM.

Western has ZWECC (wildlife type club) which will get you exposure in your first 2 years, required rotation through the Los Angeles Zoo in third year and tons of other places you can go in fourth year (I spent a month at the Calgary Zoo and loved it there).

I agree with Chris :-D, My classmates have gone to the zoo several times and they take many field trips throughout the year to various places, and we get talks by some wildlife and marine vets during our lunchtimes and its really interesting :-D I think some of my classmates volunteer at the local marine place a couple times a month too. Good luck with your decision.
