There are a few programs outside of my home state that I was really excited about, but their interview invites have gone out already and I didn't receive any (although have received several within my home state). 🙁

I'm considering asking my academic advisor to call some of those programs on my behalf. Does that ever happen? How big of a deal is it? When should I make that request?

This is also complicated because my advisor is also on the admissions committee for my home program, and I'd like to be competitive here too. How can I ask my advisor to contact another program without jeopardizing my chances at my home program? Will they care if I sound more interested in another region?

😕 Thanks!

bump...I have the same question. Anyone have some advice?

I asked my academic advisor (well known ophthalmologist) to contact on my behalf. Got multiple offers this way. My understanding is this is fairly common practice especially at top/top mid tier programs.
