Will DO schools frown upon LORs from MDs?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Not at all if you have a stronger relationship with the MD and particularly if you also include a letter from a DO.

I have a number of classmates that only submitted a letter from an MD even though a DO letter was "strongly recommended," myself included. One of my interviewers asked about it, the others didn't. I didn't feel like it would mean much to submit a letter from someone I shadowed a couple times and I will admit I didn't have the courage to ask someone I didn't know very well.

Only those that REQUIRE a DO LOR.

For all the others, lacking a DO LOR will not hurt, but having one will help.
If you have one from a DO but also one from an MD, would the MD hurt you if you are applying to a school that requires a DO LOR?

Such as Neurologists, Cardiologists, etc? Just wanted to know since I'm shadowing them.

I would seriously, seriously hope not. If they do you probably don’t want to be trained by an organization that has that perspective.

When reading the Osteopathic Medical College Information Book 2018-2019, the only school I noted in my spreadsheet that explicitly required a DO letter was Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (ARCOM). LECOM said DO preferred, but MD ok. Don't quote me though :bag:

Schools That Absolutely Require A DO Letter

I can't vouch for the accuracy of this table > LECOM has changed their policy for starters

Per WVSOMs website it's still DO required.

I had an MD letter (instead of DO) and was just accepted to 2 DO schools. However in one interview I was asked why I didn't have a DO letter as opposed to an MD. Be prepared to answer that question!

Mine would be "I have not even met a single DO that I know of."

N=1, but I only had MD letters, and I've gotten 6 DO IIs, attended one so far, and was accepted to that one. I don't think it's a negative to have MD letters, but it's a plus to have a DO letter.

I had 2 MD letters (0 DO letters) and just got accepted to my top DO school. I did have good relationships with DO physicians who I worked with, however, I felt that the MDs who I worked with knew me better and could write more strongly on my behalf.

Only if they are bad letters. However, some schools require a DO letter.
