...actually, the real question is: Will telling a school you'll be in town for a different school's interview get you an interview at the first school?

Somebody in a thread once posted that they did this and then quickly got an interview invite from Stanford.

This has caused other people to believe that writing such a letter "tends" to get you an interview invite. I just want to put to rest the idea that one random coincidental event means that it actually works. Or, maybe I will be brutally proven wrong in this thread, in which case I should start writing some letters myself.

I am not even close to an expert; I just doubt that ADCOMS will read a letter about my travels and then drop what they're doing to send me an interview invite.

Just like I doubt that farting on a turkey will get me an HMS interview invite, even if I heard it worked for somebody once.

They *might* schedule a convenient date for you if they've already reviewed your file and decided to invite you.

So you're saying there's a period of time after which they've reviewed your file and made a decision about you, but haven't yet informed you, and if you send the letter during this window of time then it works?

It seems risky to send a letter hoping they've already made a decision about you, because it would be pretty bold to write to them about interview dates if they haven't completed reviewing your file.

Right?

Farting on a turkey will not get you an interview at HMS but pooping one out will, however.

If you already have an interview scheduled in, say, NYC, and you're from LA, it's legitimate to contact other schools that you've applied to in NYC with the hopes that you can schedule a couple interviews at the same time and save some $$ on a flight. Sometimes this will give the adcom a little push to dig your app out of the pile and make a decision.

However, many/most schools only are this generous for international applicants--say, those kids who are in Malawi working for the Peace Corps and don't have the time/money to fly back 5 times for interviews. Last winter, I e-mailed NYC School B after getting an interview at NYC School A hoping that B would grant me an interview coinciding with A...I did get an interview from B but it was scheduled 2 weeks later, meaning I had to fly to NYC twice within two weeks! Basically, the adcom is not going to go out of their way to save you money.

Ok, thanks for the info.

I just wonder if people could shoot themselves in the foot by trying to rush the adcom, but maybe the worst consequence is that they ignore your request.

Some schools are more willing to accommodate you than others. For example, I was able to do two interviews in NYC in two days to prevent a second trip. Others, though, don't really care.

Maybe if you brought them a cooked turkey and some chocolates?

I'd fart on a turkey and eat it to get an interview to Harvard.
