Or other competitive specialties.... But I am mostly interested in dermatology. I heard it is extremely hard to match. I am wondering, do those who do the MSTP/MD-PhD program have a higher chance of matching into derm than those who do just the regular MD program?

Thanks.

Why are you interested in Dermatology?

Can somebody just please answer my question? I am interested in derm because it is a lifestyle specialty and pays a lot

Well, he gave an honest reply

which is more than what I can say about my colleagues at my school that want to go into derm because the "pathology is interesting"....

2nd. Honest answer = honest reply.
Don't do a PhD. Wasted time. Spend the effort instead trying to kill step 1 and getting publications.
Right now focus on getting into the most prestigious medical school you possibly can.

Hmm. But with a PhD I would graduate with no debt. I don't know. Wouldn't a PhD also yield in publications? Not sure

Dude, if you want to be a dermatologist, then you need to be committed enough to it to believe that you will get it and that debt doesn't matter because you'll pay it all back your first year out.
Most of your classmates will be very in debt and pursue much less financially rewarding careers and will become wealthy. You need to drop this attitude fast. Focus on doing well, not pinching pennies. Take this from someone who did pinch pennies. I have very little debt, but crap grades because of it.

Also, you are not entitled to have any of your questions answered. Stop being a dick. Get into medical school first and be thankful for the advice you are getting and stop making demands.

Um, the previous guy who answered my question said my age. I think I know what my age is. I am looking for answers that answer my question, not tell me what my age is.

Hint: he didn't write that to inform you of what you age is.

There is a guy on the Derm forums named "N-Surge" who has a PhD and matched Derm. I believe that his step 1 score was low (<210), and he matched because of his PhD. The point being, if your Step 1 sucks, then having a PhD (with some papers) can help you. Contact him and ask.

good luck

The first step towards matching into derm is staying the **** out of the med student forum.

Before this gets moved to pre-allo...I highly recommend that if you're looking for a study break you check out streampaw's other threads over there. They are providing endless entertainment.

Dude you can do all of the cosmetic derm stuff w/o doing a derm residency.

Do a family med residency and then setup a skin clinic doing every botox, laser, etc. known to man. You can make as much money as residency trained dermatologist (probably more because you would be focusing on cosmetics).
