sorry to ask such a personal question:
my bf is applying into ophtho this year but doesn't know if he'll match because his board scores are kind of in the low range. Here are his stats:

step 1: low 220s
medical school: top 5
high passes on basic clerks., honors on electives--overall, average student in preclinical years
LORs from Wilmer faculty

should i tell him to apply into something else? will he meet cut-offs for interviews???

Should you tell him to apply to something else?!? He should apply to whatever he wants to do, at least the first time. While he's not the ideal candidate, form everything I've read it can happen for him too. Please check FAQ page to get a good idea of matching stats. HTH

Dear nylee,
First, remember that there is no set "formula" for residency. You should encourage him to apply (if ophtho is what he really wants to do). I think the best advice I could give is for him to go back to one or all of those Wilmer faculty who wrote him a LOR and ask them for advice. After giving said faculty his numbers, grades, etc, ask him/her, "what programs do you see
being a good fit for me?" This usually generates a list of many programs where he/she knows program directors/dept chairs well. The goal is to be a great student and get as many influential people who care about your boyfriend's career on his side.

I believe that this is something he has to decide.
Is this the field he wants?
Is it more important than the safety of matching somewhere else nand not having to undergo the stressfull possibility of not matching?
I haev heard that it is impossible to match without good stats, onlyto see it being overturned the next day.

Due to Wilmer's great reputation in ophtho, he'll probably have a good shot at getting interviews with the letters he'll get from their faculty. He'll have a very decent shot at matching somewhere as long as he applies broadly.

most likely he will match (80-90%). coming from a top-5 school is a huge asset that will likely overcome the slight disadvantage of a relatively low step 1 score. LOR's from prominent faculty can go a long way, but not always.

on the other hand, if he were coming from an average/unranked school, I'd say maybe (50-60%).

Many are like the above at Iowa.

I got lucky. I was MD-PhD from Hopkins with a lot on my plate when I entered residency. Grades and numbers aren't everything.
