Hello everyone,

I plan on solely applying to DO school this summer. I have come a long way in a Herculean attempt to be competitive. Potential 3.5/3.5 gpa by the end of June with pure 4.0 grades in my last 70 units. Currently sitting on a horrible 21 MCAT.

I plan on applying to 1 school at the end of June to start the verification process, retake the MCAT in August and then update my application in September.

Is it instead advised that I apply to all my target schools in June but state my intent to retake the mcat on aacomas or wait until I get my mcat score back in Sept to fully apply? I heard it's possible to get secondaries without an mcat, but in my case would i be put on hold or worse, autorejected if I apply with the 21 despite mentioning a retake is on it's way?

I'm just worried about barely getting to my secondaries in OCT and being at a disadvantage for those reasons.

Thanks so much guys

I wouldn't submit your primary application to the schools you are planning to apply to until you have your next MCAT score because yes, you may in fact be auto rejected if you do and that closes the door on that school.

What I think you should do is apply to the safety school (I would choose a school that you for sure do not want to go to or has a super strong state bias that you are not a resident of such as OSUCOM or OUHCOM) to just get your primary processed and ready to go. If possible, start prewriting secondaries to the schools of your choice while also preparing to retake the MCAT in august (think of it as your "break" from studying for the MCAT) and then submit everything in September which is still fairly early.

Be sure to have everything ready by september --> primary app fee's, secondary essays prewritten, MCAT score updated, LOR's ready to submit with the secondaries.

Good luck!

You're in striking distance of KYCOM, ACOM and a few of the newest schools.

I've heard some rumors that KYCOM has improved its numbers a bit. They didn't offer me an interview also, making me believe that unless you're local or have tons of rural volunteering that they simply won't be all that interested.

Regarding ACOM, pretty sure they're pushing a 26 or 27.

Idk, unless the OP can score a 24 he probably shouldn't apply until he can do a better retake.

Not even close to striking distance with a 21 MCAT. The 3.5 GPA is not enough of a saving grace.

I have interviewed with KYCOM, so the rural aspect is true (well from a rural area myself). ACOM had pushed up their stats quite a bit. DocWinters stated this class might have a 28 average this year. Bare minimums they were looking for mid-cycle at ACOM were 26 MCAT or 3.3 GPA.

accepted student averages or even averages of students who have paid deposits typically drop 1-2 points by the time the cycle closes.

glancing at the ACOM thread not too long ago, someone posted that the school has accepted people with teens MCAT's before.

Yep definitely true. It could end up being a 27 MCAT or even 26 MCAT. I still believe the standards have gone up for the school, but not by a large amount.

This was possible a year or two ago and I think they have upped their stat requirements. I don't think you will be see as many cases this cycle.

I unequivocally plan on retaking the MCAT ; no questions asked it has to be done. In terms of timing though, the reason why I am shooting for an august retake is because I want to give myself at least 2 months to study for the new mcat (classes don't end until June).

A gap year would be devastating to my morale, as I have spent the last 2 years retaking every C or lower grade. The 3.5 is comprised of my second chance A's and a bunch of non-retake B's from undergrad.

What is scaring me is the fact that everyone continues to stress the importance of applying early, which I absolutely believe myself. Will not getting a new mcat score until late september destroy my chances as a below average applicant, especially if I want to get into my home state school that looks for high gpa/mcat applicants?

If you can get at least a percentile equivalent to a 27+ on the MCAT, you won't be a below average for DO schools. The best thing to do is apply early and let your application get processed. You should be fine taking the MCAT in August for DO schools. The scores don't take too long for the schools to receive them. It wouldn't be an early app, but more an on time application.

As for the MD schools, the latest you should take the MCAT is July for an early application. A lot will be hingent on your scores. Timing is more crucial for MD schools than DO schools.

To follow up on my young coleahue's comment, some schools like high MCATs, some schools like high GPAs.
