GPA: 4.0
Volunteering: one year at a hospital, currently volunteering at this clinic for homeless people
shadowing: shadowed a radiologist and currently shadowing a surgeon

jobs: by the time i apply, i will had been working as a tutor for 3 years
i was a summer camp counselor for one summer

i am in AED pre med club

no research experience.

what do you guys think my chances are? and do you think i have to get on the MCAT to make it into a texas medical school?

thanks!

I think you are well on your way to a seat in a Texas medical school. As you know, the MCAT is what will determine your competitiveness at each school. For the low tier schools in TX, you are looking at something like a 30-32. For the mid tier, 33-35, and for Baylor, 36+.

Note that these numbers are what you need (IMO of course) to be a strong candidate.

well you still have 2 yrs left. keep the gpa high and kill the mcat.

if it is possible, id recommend getting some research under your belt. it wont make or break your application but its nice to have.

id also try to get more clinical experience. id say the best case scenario would be to land a clinical research job. that way you can kill 2 birds with one stone.

every year it gets more and more competitive in texas. but if you score a 30+ on the mcat i think youd be a strong candidate (especially if you can maintain the 4.0 gpa).

good luck!

A peer leadership experience would be nice to acquire before you apply, possibly as an officer in AED. If you don't intend to get in a research experience, you want to have something for all the other desirable elements.

Having a research experience might be a good idea if you aim to attend Baylor.

And if you keep the GPA high, you might be fine with an MCAT of 28-29 even.

in highschool i was treasurer for National Honor Society and V.P. for HOSA.

does any of that count, or is my slate clean once i get to college?

thanks

Sorry, the only activities you can include from HS are those you continue during the college years.

Yup, truth.

However, if you have an activity about 'Leadership,' you can mention near the end something like you have a history of leadership, dating back to high school. I'm talking 1-2 sentences. This would be fair. Just don't make a new activity for high school stuff.

ill be taking the mcat in janurary, so i have about a good 6 months or so to study and try to get a 30+.

but besides from that, the one major thing im looking to add to my application is this summer externship at UT Houston next summer. do you guys think that will make me stand out enough?

btw, when does application season begin?

thanks

there is also a summer research program at UT houston next summer so ima try to apply for one of those.

Summer research is nice. Nothing super, but certainly nice.

The application season begins the first week of June.

Good luck!
