I am starting med school this fall. I have a small criminal background. I had an MIP my freshman year of college, and a "maintaining a disorderly house" in college as well (both misdemeanors). The second one has been set aside from my record. I also had a couple other citations that were dismissed. Will I have issues obtaining my medical license b/c of these?

I'd check with the state boards where you may want to practice. From what I understand, felonies and violent crimes are the show stoppers. You may have to jump through some hoops, but you should be fine.

Medical schools perform background checks because they don't want to train a person who is unable to get licensed. If you disclosed your charges with your school, and got accepted, you are fine.

Your best plan is to get a lawyer that is experienced in these matters. Like the poster said above me, medical schools do background checks. However, the background checks medical schools do vs the ones done before residency are A LOT different. First off, many institutions looking to invite you for residency/rotations will want an FBI background check which will show pretty much everything (even deferments). Finally, few of us on this website are lawyers in are part time (me especially so) so I would just get into contact with an experienced individual and ask them this question. Best of luck.

Med schools run background checks to make sure you won't train for 4 years and pay 250k to then not be able to obtain a medical license. If they know about it, and clear you for admission, then for that STATE, you should be fine. It's my understanding that the state boards ask you to disclose absolutely everything that has ever happened, they run the check, and baring anything huge ... you're fine. I really doubt an MIP and that - lol - house party thing, are going to keep you from practicing. If it would give you peace of mind to speak to an attorney, go for it. I personally wouldn't waste 200 bucks for an hour to hear you're fine.
