Will I have time to continue bodybuilding in med school?

I do bodybuilding. I'm not like a pro or anything, but its a fun hobby and takes up a good amount of time every week. I know med school is demanding, can an active bodybuilder keep up their routine while in med school?

I dont care if school and gym is all i end up doing, as long as i can do it. I did both + work as an undergrad so hopefully it'll still be manageable in med school.

I've got several friends who did it all throughout first year, and some now 2nd year too. You probably won't want to spend more than an hour a day, but besides that you're good.
 
Yeah sure, but once you hit Endocrine and/or Reproductive and learn that steroids will make your balls shrink, you may want to think twice about it.

I'm assuming the OP simply means that he wants to continue lifting weights and staying in shape. Pro-tip: you don't have to use steroids to get a lot bigger and stronger than your average slob.

Yes, it's doable. You're going to need to miss days occasionally for things that are more important but I've always hit my minimum days in the gym per week.
 
First two years no prob..gets tough to maintain a routine on your core clinical rotations..4th year no prob...the real trying time is during internship and early residency.

You have time for what you want.

There is a world of difference in effort to get a P vs a H in medical school. There is a world of difference between 5 P's in one semester vs 5 H's in one semester. There is a world of difference between an AOA student and the bottom quartile. The is a world of difference between someone mastering all the basic science and someone who doesn't. There is a huge difference between those actively networking for their career and shadowing and those who don't.

So, when people ask, "will a medical student have time for ___?" I'm always confused because it seems like they think all medical students spend equal amount of time pursuing their medical aspirations.

Kid in my class won the college body-building competition actually (let's not talk about his brush with Manorexia though).

Med school is all about priorities. You'll find the time for some (but not all) of what is important to you.

If your school has a gym then you could always do it as a study break. I usually study at school rather than home, and if I find myself losing focus and getting distracted I'll usually go to the gym and run or do weights for 45 minutes or so. It's also been great at reducing stress before tests. Win-win.
 
I would say during the first 2 years it should not be a problem. You might have to plan ahead on study weeks so you can have time the couple of days before a test

During MS 3-4 it will vary based on rotation- I haven't been to the gym while on OB/GYN labor and delivery and night float but can go when doing normal clinic. Surgery is another rotation that has crazy hours.

Ball size usually comes back. If you use it like some groups, it is just used to get over a wall anyway, so it never really becomes an issue.


Anyway, first year I had plenty of time to do lifting. Second year was a little more difficult, but it had more to do with my overall goals and some other things. (I lost about 20 pounds)

I won't say it is impossible, but you may find that you enjoy doing other things more than having to worry about eating throughout the day for a bulking phase or whatever you are doing.

If you are one of those guys that goes in and does 800 sets of 10 reps with 60 different exercises, you may have some problems. You can have a perfectly fine workout that takes only an hour and gets most of your goals done.
