Hello,

I am premed, and my university does not have many research opportunities, and the pandemic has made It hard to do any shadowing or volunteer work. I have heard that research is the most coveted e.c activity, and my dad is a professor at my university. Over the summer, I helped him as an intern with his hemp research, and last summer, I gained over 200 h of research experience. This research, however, is field research and is not in a lab setting or a clinical setting. However, hemp has many implications in medicine. I wonder if I should continue doing hemp research and possibly get some p or switch to volunteering and shadowing as the pandemic rolls to a stop? Thanks

Clinical experience is the "most coveted EC activity," not research. If you don't have adequate active and passive clinical experience (shadowing), research alone won't make you a viable med school candidate.

Ag research is fine for a med school application, whether or not it has medical implications, and whether or not it took place in a lab. It's value depends on your role. Do you understand the hypothesis that's being tested? And the steps that constitute the Scientific Process? Did you read the original grant application and perhaps some of the background papers so you have a good overview? Do you have any creative or problem-solving input? Are you able to develop your own project (with bonus points for this latter)?
