I looked through the FAQs and didn't see this, so I apologize if it's posted somewhere. Feel free to just link me if it is.

I was wondering how old is too old for prereqs? I've seen some schools state that science prereqs must be no older than 5 years. That's kind of hard for a non trad.
My bio 1 will be 7 years when I apply in 2013.
My chem 1 will be 6 years when I apply in 2013.

Will these be too old?
I got a B in both classes, so I'd rather not retake them, but should I?

Thanks!

Every school is able to decide for themselves whether to accept older credits. I've found that most do not let credits expire, but you'll definitely want to check with each individual school. Duke for example states on their web page that credits expire after 7 years. I won't be applying there unless they make an exception because my physics will be 13ish years old. The rest of my pre-reqs will be more recent.

My bio 1/2 and chem 1/2 were 14 years old. What was suggested to me was to take a few other upper level science classes to "prove" I could do it/still know the material. I was in a position I had saved up enough to return to school full time without working aside from some consulting. I also had to take Biochem since I live in FL and most require it. To take biochem, I needed quant. I added a genetics class since it is emphasized on the MCAT. Between those and another prereq, bioorganic chem, I never had a single question about the age of my classes.

I agree with above - call the schools you want to apply to. My prereqs were 10+ yrs old, and there were no problems, but I also was told by my premed advisor to take some recent classes to have something newer on my transcript.

Good luck!!
