Will schools think less of me for applying geographically?

I'm applying to every school in MA and NC because I have a brother applying to grad schools at the same time right now. I know Med Schools can see where else you applied.

Truth be told I know I can be successful almost wherever I go, but being close to my brother for the next four years would be such a strong deciding factor for me in terms of happiness and quality of life. Will some of these schools not take me seriously for this?

I'm pretty sure they can't see where else you applied.

Schools can't see where else you've applied. They can only see where else you've been accepted once they've accepted you.

Schools cannot see where else you've applied. At some point late in the cycle (March, maybe?) they can see where you're accepted. They will probably ask you "Why X school?" and maybe "Why X state?" in your interview.

Forgive me, then. I know the TMDSAS specifically asks you what AMCAS system schools you're applying for. I feel much better now. 🙂

I'd mention it in interviews at the non-Texas schools, as they'll all be wondering how serious a Texan is about going out of state and a local family connection is a strong argument. Part of the admissions decision process is that schools want to make offers to people the think have a good chance of choosing to attend.

Save your money and dont apply to ECU(Brody School of Medicine), they only take in state residents.

I would absolutely agree with this - esp since if you're in-state in TX, out-of-state schools would know there's a big tuition difference and you'll probably want to demonstrate that you have a good reason to go elsewhere!

Who can blame a guy for wanting to get his butt out of Texas? Makes sense to me. Go for it. Nobody outside of Texas will hold it against you. Sure, Texas is a big state, but it is not the whole country!

You guys must have shared a bedroom and had bunkbeds. Hard to let go.

Haha. We were apart for undergrad. I'd just like to have him in the same state at least for the next four years.

And yes, I know about ECU and UMass, but thanks again for the heads up. 🙂

Actually they do hold it against us. I have had numerous interviews for med school and residency ask why I applied outside of Texas. Apparently TX applicants rarely leave TX, so other states are reluctant to even interview us.

No one has yet to persuade me, so I see where they are coming from.
