I have been reading about RN to MD and it seems people are saying the admission committee would reject you because there is a shortage of RN's and they are needed. How could I be rejected because of this? There must be other reasons? Because in Canada there is also starting to be a Physician shortage especially in rural areas!

My main question is should I really just switch programs and apply with another degree instead of my nursing degree?

Why are you pursuing your RN before your MD? To work for a while and gain experience? To help pay for school?

Are you planning on practicing as a nurse for an extended period of time? If not, I'd choose a different major. Most of the science classes you take in nursing will not count towards the pre-reqs for med school.

I hope this isn't true because I'm a nursing student who decided last minute that I want to go to medical school. I'm going to work as a Nurse so I can pay my way through medical school but also have clinical experience.

Exactly. What made you decide to pursue this path in the first place?

I don't think the RN will = automatic rejection, but it seems like a harder road. As one poster pointed out, there isn't as much overlap in prerequisites as many people think. Also an adcom is going to (maybe) look at an applicant just completing an RN program as someone who doesn't know what they want. Another consideration is that people who are a great fit for nursing often are not such a good fit for MD, and vice versa.

All things considered I would switch to another science major. It's definitely not an 'auto-reject' or something if you apply from an RN, but I know at my school they strongly question BNs at the interview stage about why they are switching. I've been told (anecdotal from an official) that if you don't have a good reason as to why you switched it might work against you. (This opinion is completely unqualified. lol.)

Very late reply by me, I totally forgot I posted this.

Basically my reason is that I wanted to be a MD in the first place, but didnt think I could do it. I was in Biopharmecuetical Science for one year with a low B average so I was discouraged. Then I was thinking well if I cant be a MD maybe Nursing is good enough to fulfill my need to help. Now I have more confidence and I truly believe I can do it and be a competent physician. Also, I think my nursing school experience will only help me be a better MD.
Theres something great about seeing a patient go home after a successful hospital stay 🙂

Is this a reason they will just scoff at?
I screwed up my chances big time now didnt I...

Hopefully its not an auto-reject...I'm officially half-done today
