I heard that a friend of a friend has two interviews scheduled for this month even though he has not taken his dat yet. I always thought that they would not even review your application unless it was complete (ie complete appl, transcripts, dat, letter of rec...)
Has anyone out there heard or experienced this?

Yeah i got an interview from temple before they got my DAT scores

Last year I was offered interview's without DAT to the following:

Temple
UF
NYU

But I had taken it by the interview

i'm assuming you guys have kick a$$ GPAs... right?

nice... i see that graduate degree helped 😀

excuse my ignorance but how does that work? What if you have an awesome interview and end up bombing your dats?

Besides, this guy does not have great gpa (low low 3's). He only decided to apply to dental school because he didn't do well on his MCATS, and thought that dental school would the easy route

Getting an interview doesnt mean acceptance. So if you bomb your dats after your interview, then you wont get accepted. The school has nothing to lose when it offers a potentially strong candidate an interview.

you just lost me boi... are you talking about Brochizer?

no, I'm not talking about any SDers. I am talking about the dude that I heard got the interviews which inspired me to post the thread in the first place.

oh, you lost me there for a sec buddy 😛... so did the "guy" get admitted?

not yet, he will have his interviews later on this month.

As for me, I'm just like everyone else here, chewing my fingers off waiting for december 1st to come around

I was offered an interview w/o dat scores. I had them by the time I got there, but that wasn't a stipulation.

a little OT:
At my recent interview at Boston, my DAT was not mentioned even once! The interviewer was more interested in the personal statement and my life experiences than grades and scores.

Agreed, my DAT scores have not been mentioned either and I've interviewed at three schools.

So I take it you can get interviews before your LOR's are received?

depends on that school.
Pacific and USC probably wont touch ur file till everything is received.
Quite possibly for UCLA as well.
UMB doesnt require all LOR.

Be careful wanabe! You may not know the entire story.

Maybe the guy decided that he didn't want to go to med school because his room-mate was a second year resident and he hated their life style. Sure the first couple of years of dental school are similar to med school but life as a resident sucks.

And maybe it wasn't the guy's GPA (low 3's) that got him the interviews without the DAT. Just possibly it had something to do with his 3500 hours of Oral and Maxillfacial surgery experience or his volunteer work at The Native American Community Health Center Dental Clinic. Wow, imagine a guy this committed to dentistry who thinks of the profession as just an easy alternative to medical school. Get your facts straight and don't post such B.S. until you do!

I'll let you know how the interviews went.

I may not have the greatest GPA but I also don't consider a 3.4 "low low 3's".

wow, didn't mean to upset anybody. I was curious about something I'd heard. That's great that you can get interviews w/out dat. Personally I think one single test cannot give a good indication about how a person will preform in dental school, or even how dedicated an individual is about dentistry. I mainly applied to schools in the west, and they are really strict on a complete application.
As for the SDner that insists this post is about him. Sorry that I made you feel that you had to own up to this and justify your situation to the thousands that view this site everyday. Your grades are very respectable, for dental...and for medical school, such a shame that your new-found discovery about the hardships of residency is such a factor now. I can assure you that I had no particular person in mind when I posted this. I wish you the best of luck with dental school and please do keep us posted on your interviews and dat.

I know LeFort guy personally. And of any person who deserves to be a good dentist and will be a good dentist, it is him. He does in fact have over 3000 hours working for an oral surgeon. He knows more about dentistry than many members on this forum. He was a natural fit for dentistry and he initially chose medicine like so many of us based on superficial information. Once he arrived at Midwestern, he like me and many others had the priviledge of viewing medicine from a first person point of view. Most people don't have the opportunity to study in the same setting alongside MS 1 (first year medical students) So he has made a very informed decision to say the least.

you can be interviewed at BU w/o your DATs....

i think for the most part the schools that have the higher acceptances does interview w/o DAT....

I was interviewed at temple and BU w/o my DAT score and the second I took my DAT (end of Nov) I recieved 6 more interviews...and then 2 (UCLA and UOP) a few months later

My official DAT scores have not gotten to Case Western , and I have not heard anything from them.

I have been hoping that it is because they require the application to be complete before scheduling an interview. (???)

It does seem to me like a school should schedule an interview without the official DAT scores. I did report my scores to them, just not the official copy yet. Oh well.....
