Wisconsin Programs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I didn't end up interviewing at any of the UW programs but I had a couple scheduled so I know a bit about them. I also know a little about the cities. I think the UW programs suffer from stiff competition in Wisconsin, especially Wausau and Eau Claire; neither of them have filled in the match the last couple of years, I think. Both of these are great towns to live in, by the way. Eau Claire has won some sort of "best town to live in" award a couple of times that they are very proud of.

Madison is a great place to live. Cost of living is very high though, which prompted us to look elsewhere. Also, it's major college town for good and bad. Lots of sports and culture stuff. I did read through their little booklet and it seems like a strong program. They have a rural track in Baraboo, which looked interesting, but you have to live in Madison the first year and then move, which seemed complicated to us.

Then there's Fox Valley and the one in Milwaukee which I don't know too much about.

I thought you had you eyes on the super-FP programs in California, PACtoDOC?

Hey Bell,

I undoubtedly do still have my eye on the Cali programs, but I promised myself I would scroll through the entire list of states on the AAFP website and evaluate each and every program before application time. Usually I end up clicking out in a matter of seconds when I find something really dissappointing. But when I got to Wisconsin, and found the UW system, I got really interested. It seems they have dual AOA/ACGME accreditation for all sites, they seem to have a strong track record or training top knotch OB FP's, and they have a rural emphasis that places then 4th on USNews's List of Primary Care training, behind some incredible places like UWash (which is always number one!!). Couple that with an incredible cost of living, 4 seasons, and some gorgeous country, and you get all the things I like. So I am committed to going and checking these places out, most likely this summer. If they suit my fancy, I will probably go up for a one month rotation and split it between the Appleton site, the Eau Claire site, and the Wausau site. I had to laugh though when you talked about the high price of living in Madison 🙂 The average small home near the program in Contra Costa (Martinez, Ca) would set me back about 650K!!! Madison would be a wonderful change for the better from that, but I don't think I would be interested in the Baraboo site for the sake of the move as you mentioned. Now if I can just get past the 4 months of sub-freezing temperatures!! I lived in Chicago for a year and loved it, but I was younger then and routinely was only out in the cold when I was too drunk to know better!! 🙂

Ok, I hear you about Madison. 😀 Everything is relative, I guess.

I'm a little surprised that you haven't looked more closely at LaCrosse and Waukesha. They seem to be the big juggernauts of the Wisconsin FP scene. When you look at their residents, they are certainly the two programs in the state that are able to pull in grads from all over the country. Waukesha has very strong OB, with some residents hitting 200+ deliveries, by the way.

I could not agree more about Wisconsin. It really is a nice area. I wonder, have you looked at the program in Duluth? As an IMG, I could not apply there (rrrr 😡 ) but I know the program well. Now that's one beautiful area and certainly a good program (do they produce super-FPs? I'm not sure 🙂 ).

Bellkicker, check your PM. Thanks, cristagali 😎
