Hey guys,

I had some questions about wisdom teeth removal and was hoping you could help me out. On the left side, my upper wisdom tooth is fully erupted and functional but my oral surgeon says its roots will damage by nerves. The bottom left tooth is partially erupted, sideways impacted (caused pain when it was erupting, but not anymore.) I am 20 years old.

1- If I decide to get these 2 removed, how long will I need to recover? If I am in college full-time, could I have this on a Friday afternoon and go to school on Monday? Or should I plan on having a whole week off? (In the latter case, is it worth taking a week off from school NOW, or can I wait a few months until break?)

2- Will I be able to drive 4-5 hours 2 days after the procedure? Or should I plan to stick around in the vicinity of the surgeon who does the procedure for a week or two, so he can deal with complications ? (as opposed to me having to go to another oral surgeon.)

3- The oral surgeon I saw said he strongly recommended IV sedation. Since I'm very averse to pain and dentists fiddling around in my mouth, I am inclined to follow his advice. But, at the same time, I'm not sure if its worth it with the risks of IV sedation. Is it possible to get the procedure done in a hospital rather than in the OMS's office? Do I call local hospitals and ask them if they do extractions? In a hospital, will students operate on me?

I checked the archives already but these are some specific circumstances; thanks a lot.

SDN is not for medical advice. These are normal questions, but you should be directing them at your oral surgeon and not a bunch of strangers on the internet. 🙂
