So, i was accepted to Ohio State today 🙂 I'm 80-90% sure this is where I would like to go unless I get into University of Wisconsin-Madison. I have interviews lined up at Iowa, Mississippi and Minnesota. I'm definitely withdrawing from Mississippi (being a Maine girl, i can't handle the heat) but I'm trying to decide if I want to withdraw from Iowa and/or Minnesota. I've always been interested in Iowa but I will be $30,000 more in debt if I were to end up there. Minnesota is cheaper than Ohio IF i can get in-state tuition (which doesn't seem to be extremely easy). I really liked Ohio when I was there for my interview. I guess I'm just trying to get an opinion from pre-vets who understand. What would you do??

If you definitely don't see yourself in Mississippi, then I would withdraw. As for the other places, you may fall in love when you go for the interviews. I wouldn't withdraw from those places, unless the money needed to get to the interviews/hotel costs would be a serious issue. It's always nice to have a couple options in the end.

I think this is great advice. I'm in a similar situation right now. I've been accepted to Ohio, Cornell, and Penn. I've pretty much got it narrowed down to Cornell and Penn, so I'll be declining my Ohio acceptance soon and I withdrew my application from Guelph. I just got an interview invite from Minnesota, and I honestly would love to go and see the school because I've heard wonderful things about it, but traveling to interview there really is a financial stretch right now - so I declined. I'm currently debating my interview at Tufts, because it won't cost me anything but gas to get there, and who knows, I might fall in love with the school. So in conclusion, DickVetPlease's advice is exactly what I'd recommend. CONGRATS on Ohio and good luck on your other interviews if you decide to attend them!

Here's the thing...

The more I look into schools, the more I love and am leaning toward OSU. I really like the fact that they don't track so I can learn a bit of everything as I am not 100% sure which veterinary path I want to take. Also, I'm probably going to try to get my MPH and I am in love with the veterinary MPH program at OSU.

Also (not as important), I'm from Maine, so Ohio is still "Technically" driving distance from home (13hrs) Which makes my life easier when going home for Christmas and other holidays. AND, my bf who is sacrificing a lot to come with me to school really likes columbus.

So, this is why I think I want to just take this acceptance and run. I guess it just feels weird to have a choice and to turn down an interview. I didn't get a single interview last year lol Just a weird feeling

They are actually talking about adding some "tracking" for our clinical rotations so for 1/4 of our time in them, we could focus on our desired field.

And keep in mind with the OSU MPH, its not something you can start concurrently with the DVM program. People have to start it a year before starting the DVM program, and then they finish it up the summer after their first year of vet school.

Its an awesome place though! And the 13 hour drive will only be half as miserable if you are doing it with someone.

I think it's amazing you are getting all there interviews! And even though you have a big decision to make, it would be amazing if you could keep the rest of us in mind- those of us still waiting for an interview. As time goes by, we feel our hope fading away 🙁
Congrats on your acceptance, and I hope you reach a conclusion soon!!

I was/am in your shoes, got accepted to OSU on 12/23 and had interviews lined up for Iowa and Missouri.. I declined Iowa because I can not see myself going there and recently Minnesota, but I decided to go to Missouri just to 'see' but I ended up LOVING it.. I mean i loved Ohio when I was there but now I am not sure if it is where I would be the most happy. I would say that if you have any doubt, even a little, that you might want to go to x school then I would interview. Trust me, money is one of the biggest factors that almost made me not go to Missouri but if you can scrape it together then go. Of course i am still waiting for Missouri to accept me (fingers crossed) but if I am faced with a few choices it will be a very hard decision. Good luck with it all though!

OSU - I have also heard that they are talking about adding tracking to clinical rotations from a 2nd year

OSU - I have also heard from a 2nd year that they might be phasing out the tracking in rotations but who knows if this might happen.

You mean phasing in the tracking? We don't currently track here and they are talking about adding it in for my class (2013).

hah yeah thats what i meant, i changed it 🙂 oops i need to go to bedddd

I think DickVet's advice is solid. I loved Purdue, followed by Cornell, and Tufts, all for different aspects/reasons, and yet NCSU was/is my first choice, and I am happy to be here (I didn't even apply to Tufts). If the cost to interview and such isn't an obstacle, take your time in figuring it all out. There isn't a rush, decisions don't have to be made yet, and there may be some other aspect of another school that you find you love enough to edge out your current pick. There isn't any need to rush decisions just yet.

Minnesota has a veterinary-based MPH that can be done concurrently with your DVM. 😛

I sent you a PM jmcgintee...let me know if you got it; my sent box is not showing that i sent anything.... anywho, I'm in the VPH program at OSU and I will be starting vet school this fall... 🙂

I would definately reccommend going to the interviews. Just like everyone else said, you never know if you are going to fall in love with a different school. I had been planning on going to a particular vet school since I was little and knew it was always going to be my first choice and that I would be disappointed if I never got in there. However, when I applied, I (like most others) applied to several schools. Not only did I get an interview to my #1 choice, but I got one to another school. When I got to my other school, I absolutely (surprisingly) fell in love with it. It suddenly became my new #1 school. I went to the interview not even expecting to like it. You never know if you will like Mississippi or the other schools. You may think you don't want to be in the south, but you never know.

This is exactly how I'm feeling right now. I didn't get any interest from any of my schools last year, so the fact that I got interviews at all of them this year and am already accepted to Cornell is like the biggest self esteem boost ever! It's such a HUGE difference from last year that I can't even wrap my brain around it. I NEVER thought I'd be turning down interviews!

What did you change in your application? (experience hours, LORs, additional classes, PS)
