Withdrawing acceptance?

How should I go about withdrawing my acceptance: letter or email? I had initially accepted the offer and paid the deposit but I just received acceptance to my first choice school. Obviously I know that I won't receive the money back.

What is the most tactful way to do this? I just want to hurry so some other deserving person can have my spot!

Email. Make it short, sweet, and respectful. It's not like you're breaking up with your SO, I promise they get over it real quick.
