Hey guys I was wondering how many of you have withdrew from a class? Right now I'm feeling really bad for withdrawing from my math class and I was just curious how many others have withdrawn. It feels like I wasted my time in this class and I should just stick it out but I dont want to lower my gpa with a C.

In my opinion, W's are better then C's....

I withdrew from Calculus II. That was the only 'real' class I dropped, the rest were PE due to injuries, etc.

I was tempted to drop my biology class because I was getting a C. I had a conflicting schedule that made me miss a lot of lectures. It was general biology I.

If I get an interview I think I have a valid explanation. I figure if I don't get accepted, only then will I retake it just to show I can handle that easy class, considering I did much better in all the harder classes I've taken.

Do not get too many W's... one or two is fine, as you can justify that with some extraneous circumstances during an interview.

My "W" is from Cell Bio last semester. I enjoyed the class a great deal and didn't miss a single lecture or lab. The issue came when the first test rolled around and I got a 43%. 😱 I realized then that I had horrible study skills. I ended up dropping the class after that because I needed some time to regroup. Sounds stupid but I was devastated after that test. I thought for sure I was going to do well on it. I loved the classes and the labs were good too! It was good for me to drop the class though because it's given me some time to adjust and to get my head clearer. It was a 5 credit class, I was spending a lot of time there. 4 hours of lectures a week plus 3 hours of lab a week. Personally I think they should make that class worth 7 credits :meanie: but that's not how it works.🙄

Anyway, point is a W is probably ok. Having too many though, not good. Don't stress, if you have a good reason and it helps you then drop the class and move on.

I have three W's but they are all from PE classes that I felt were just wasting my time. None of you think that's a bad thing to have if you're thinking about applying in the future to a school like Johns Hopkins, right?

omg you are just like me. but mine's way more embarrassing. so i dropped/got a W for my cellular/molecular biology class last quarter right. the mean was 75+ for every exam & i didn't want to make gpa worse so i dropped it. and i retook it this quarter, & im doing worse. i don't know how it's possible. so i had to make it credit/non-credit and now im thinking about taking the entire gen. bio series at a cc. 🙁 bio is so not my forte.

just dont get too many W's. You may be able to explain one or two on your application. There is a big difference in explaining one or two W's, and making excuses because you have too many W's.

One of my profs told me this and it makes sense to me:

"A W means you were planning ahead and you knew that you were not going to get a satisfactory grade. So when they see a W they know you plan your life out, when they see an F they know you didnt plan yout stuff out"👍

would three W's be too many? one in theater design (find out i didn't need to take this class), economics (missed the deadline to drop without W) and genetics (i don't need any more C's on my transcript)

Relax, I think the Ad-Coms will understand 🙂 I don't think W's are a bad thing at all. I do miss those water-polo PE classes though...

I have two withdrawals in the same class, and I plan on re-taking the class and easily acing it (which I will). I have four W's overall, none in any science course. I have one in an anthro course, one in a java course, and two in the same math course (which I will be retaking). How bad is that on a transcript?

I am in the same boat as Matrix, with STUPID CHEMISTRY. I am not a pre-pharm student but none-the-less withdrawl is like a four letter word to all of us. :scared: any thoughts?

I had W's in some computer classes and a multi-cultural studies class. I don't know how negative they are for prospective students but at least it doesn't lower your GPA and that is the benchmark for most schools at least looking at your application.

My policy has always been if it's going to hurt your GPA, give it the stiff arm. Lesson def learned for me. You can explain your W but to think you can pull a miracle A-/B+, only to have reality slap you in the face at the end of the semester is not cool.

I had a B- on my general chem few semesters ago--took my sweet time contemplating on whether to drop or stick it out---missed the deadline for dropping. Now I've got a C on my transcript (Didnt do too hot on my final), C grade isnt the end of the world but it does jack up the GPA.
