i am interested in dental or medical school. I am a 2nd semester freshmen at St. Louis University. i am strugling in chemistry and i am thinking about withdrawing or else risking a C or a D in the class. if i withdraw from the class a W (withdraw) will appear on my transcript. do dental and med schools look at a W as a VERY BAD thing or is it ok to have one? i want to drop chem and retake it over the summer in order to get a better grade (hopefully). Thanks

since ur a freshman this would be looked at less severely than if u were to withdraw from orgo for example in ur second year.
they'll let this one slide. but let it be ur last though.
and, get an A in the summer,

You should be less worried about how it will look on your transcript and more worried that you struggling with gc, which by some accounts should be one of the easier courses to master.

does anyone else have any advice? how detrimental is a W for a pre med or pre dental student?

A lot of people have W's on their transcripts. You don't want to have any more than a few, and preferably in unimportant (non-dental prereq) classes. If your overall GPA at application time is high, the W's will be less of a concern. As was said earlier though, worry more about why you didn't complete a class that is a base for much of your future premed/dental education.
