I currently have a C- in biochem now and the best I can get is a low B given that I get 100% on the next couple of exams. I feel like the reason was not because I'm stupid or I didn't know the material, but that I went on vacation right before an exam, was taking too many other classes during the summer, slept too much, wasted too much time on distractions, etc. Also, a family member passed away. While this death did impact me for a week where I couldn't get much done, I don't think this is the only reason for my doing poorly for the course.

If I had to justify why on my secondaries, should I mention the family death? Or should I mention it as a learning experience and how with this class, I've learned how to be more effective at studying.

Attempting to overload on classes, not understanding your limitations, would be enough of an explanation. I would hope you'll introduce better time management skills and be able to demonstrate via your transcripts that they were effective.
