I know someone who's contemplating withdrawing from their medical school because they don't like it there. Is it possible to apply again to other schools once this has been done?

why don't they just transfer?!?!? instead of applying all over again! or why don't they just suck it up, first 2 yrs are always 'the hardest' in the sense of hard core academics, the whole 'social' scene and the 'no life' thing.......

if you get into a med school here in the US they are pretty lucky! I wouldn't withdraw without a VERY good reason.... ie: you get this massive movie contract and are guaranteed stardom or something.. even that is questionable!

anyhow..... good luck to your friend; a girl here was in the same position last year and she transferred and didn't waste any time reapplying!!

she could reapply, but if anyone finds out she quite they'll never take a chance on her... dropouts make the school look very bad (notice how hard it is too fail out of med school compared to college).

Why reapply and have to retake all the classes she's already completed? That's a waste of time and money. She should just look into transferring if she hates her school that much.

Is she nuts? Even if she loathes the school she's at, she should try to at least transfer first, and if she can't transfer, why not just suck it up and finish her MD? It's only four years, and the probability that another medical school would take a chance on a student who already was admitted to med school is low.

The question is, does your friend hate your med school or is medicine just not for her? Although med schools can really differ, in most respects they are the same-- we all go through the same boards, have to learn the same material, etc.

Hi there,
If your friend/colleague finishes the year successfully, then withdrawal carries few penalties and they are eligible for transfer. If they withdraw in the middle of a semester or year, they might have to repeat the year which would be a pain even if they were doing well.

I would suggest that they stick it out and finish the year strong. Then, have a serious chat with the Dean of Students (you want their blessing) and transfer. No one wants to keep an unhappy student.

Many medical schools will not take students who have previously matriculated in other medical schools. Your friend/colleague should do a thorough investigation before withdrawing.

njbmd 🙂

P.S. Since this is a duplicate thread with the one in Re-applicants, I am going to close this one.
