withdrawing from schools

besides being considered somewhat rude, are there any repercussions for not officially withdrawing applications from schools that have not accepted/not invited for interviews?
do you think this could haunt you if you apply to the same institution for residency?

I don't think you have to do anything. If the school does not offer an interview or acceptance, they will send you a rejection letter.

If on the other hand, you have multiple acceptances past the May date deadline, you will get into trouble. There is the potential for you to lose the multiple acceptances!
