Hey guys,

Junior standing right now, finishing up my Spanish major this semester and am still working on my Biology major and Chem minor at a small school in Kansas.

Taking my last spanish class this semester, and should end my major with a 3.89GPA there.

My cumulative is a 3.67 right now, science GPA is a 3.44 right now (my science courses last fall brought it down)

Nothing ever lower than a B, however. (No B-)

Anyway, back to the main point of the post, I am currently in a 400 level faith class (liberal arts 😡) and due to poor advising I thought it was going to be a pretty easy class. Well, it turns out we have 3 grades the entire semester (midterm which was just a few weeks ago, a final, and a presentation of which i got partnered with kind of a slacker). I got a C on the midterm, so I'd really have to do well on the other two grades in order to get a B in the course.

My general consensus after searching the web is that a single W on my transcript won't really raise any red flags. I do have a good reason behind it (poor advising, first time doing lab research which takes up a lot of time, and just a heavy course load [19 hours] and if I had to I could bring up the fact that my mom went through treatment for breast cancer, but I'd prefer not to use that as an excuse if I don't have to... it did tax me a bit emotionally and in regards to my time, but not as much as my other 16 credit hours of classes).

I don't plan on taking any other W's, but I think the general consensus is that a W is better than taking a C, which could be hoping for a lot at this point.

Any advice?

==edit==
to add a bit more into the story
*i volunteered at a hospital over the summer and plan to do so over this winter and summer break again (but i'm looking into a paid research position at UNMC in Omaha in the Cancer Institute.. my mom has worked in the hospital for ~25 years and knows a lot of people, which I'm hoping could get me a foot in the door)
*studied abroad in spain last semester
*active with my church and their volunteer opportunities
*played football my first two years of college, but quit over this summer in order to drop 50 pounds of weight and focus on school/MCAT/etc
*I am a 2nd year Resident Assistant (RA) in a freshman dorm
*Doing research with the chemistry department right now (which is medically related) (chem dept had more interesting research, but I was also thinking it would look good to branch out beyond my major)
*Biology Club/Chem Club/Organization of Latin American Students(you don't have to be latin american)/Alpha Mu Gamma (Spanish Honors Society)
*Have shadowed a few surgeries and rounds (planning on doing more)
*Many years volunteering and being a committee chair for the Relay for Life event ran by the American Cancer Society

Not reading all that. Cliffs?

In a Theology class right now which I'm pretty sure is hopeful to expect a C... drop and get a W?
Have some viable reasons as to why dropping in case comes up in interviews

Have other research, volunteer, church, and extra-curricular activities

W > C?

W are viewed as F's. Keep it and do the ABSOLUTE best you can. There are no easy way outs, stop looking for it. There must be a reason why you are getting a C in this class; learn from your mistakes and turn it around.

False?
W's are viewed as W's.. One will not raise any flags, and if an Adcom asks about it (which they won't) just be prepared to explain, and not defend why you have it. If you are going to get a C- or lower in the class I would withdraw.. GPA> pride.

my pre-med advisor and research faculty member basically told me the same thing... that a W is better than a big drop in GPA and as long as you are prepared to respond to it. Of course nobody forsees accepting any W's on their transcript, but I honestly don't see this ever happening again, because since this class I have actually planned out EVERY single class remaining that I need to graduate and their corresponding teachers and what not. Something I should have obviously done before now.

Drop it. Sounds like yo bit off more than you could chew.

You are so...uninformed.

A withdraw does not count towards your GPA breh.

Sounds like your on track. Mistakes happen, rape the rest of your classes and a withdraw won't hurt you probably at all.

I'm thinking it's just the class itself, more than anything. Of course it's natural to spread the blame, but I can handle faith classes (and have in the past), but the prof's lecture style, lack of other grades, and specificity on the test seem a bit out of whack to me. I really don't find a legitimate reason to not give at least bi-weekly quizzes for undergraduate studies. I know the whole "getting you prepared for grad school" thing, but I don't buy it from this teacher... he had to pick up another class from a faculty member that took sabbatical and I just think it's his way of lightening his load.... anyway /rant lol

I beg of you, please don't spout out absurdly false information on this forum, as people read it and actually follow the stuff on here.

W's are in no way equal to F's, but that doesn't mean you should have one every semester. Things happen, and a single W won't kill you.

A C will be a big drop in GPA for a double major + a minor? This isn't even a guaranteed C and won't impact his science GPA. Hell, mathematically you could even pull it up to an A-/A.

W's aren't looked as F's? Why does anyone drop a class? Answer is obvious.

If it were me, I would suck it up, get A's on your last two portions of your grade and get a B or B+ at least. If you have some other reason for dropping the class, go for it.

Illness, personal issues, overload on credits, professor was terrible (it happens), random mistakes (missed a test, etc), and the list goes on.
