Hey guys, this is my first post on this forum ... I'm currently on the pre-pharm track ...

Anyway, the reason I made this thread was to ask a serious question ... I wanted to know if I have any hope at all of making it to pharmacy school if I withdraw from a major pre-req course ... the "professor" of the course is incompetent beyond belief ... I mean, according to the syllabus I'm not doing so bad but according to him ...

The maximum grade I can probably get is a B+ (with curve, I think) ... but I really need an A in this class ... so will a W end my chances of making it to pharmacy school?

A couple of Ws won't hurt you but don't make it a habit. If you are still early into taking your pre-reqs, I would save the Ws for later harder classes. I don't know your exact situation, but a B really is fine unless you have a lot of other bad grades you are trying to make up for.

Let's just say that my first semester wasn't as good as it should have been ... so I practically need all A's this semester ... I'm in my first year btw ... is there anyone here that has been accepted to pharmacy school with a W on his/her transcript?

I'm in the same situation but u know what if I know I'm going make a b+ I would not withdraw I'd withdraw if it was a C. Because b is really not that bad! Just not too many. I wouldn't waste my money and time to retake a course with a B+. That's just my perspective. =) to answer your question W is better than a C. And u can still get accepted with a W.

i have 4 W's. But if I were you, I would not drop it because I would get a B+

I applied to four schools, got interviews at all, and will be attending my top pick (University of Florida) with a W on my transcript. It's ok but, as was said, don't make a habit. By the way a B+ is good!

It could be worse, OP. Heck, I have 5. And not even in hard classes, or for legitimate reasons (parents got a divorce, beloved granny died, was in horrific car accident, etc.)

I guess I should start looking at schools a little more willing to overlook these shortcomings, like Jim-Bob's Backwoods Khemical Kookin' School.

a B+ would look better than a W.. plus you wouldn't really need to redo that class.

sometimes you just have to learn how to deal with a PITA professor. I had one for gen chem. I hated that guy but took both gen chems under him anyway.

I got the heck out of dodge for O-chem and got back to liking chemistry once I had a better teacher.

A B+ will be much better than a W on your transcript.

Besides, what if you take it again next term and you end up with a B or B-, but this time 'round you would have gotten a B+? I realize this is an implicit assumption (That you'd get a worse grade if you took the W now and re-took the course with a different professor next term) but I believe it's worth considering.

Here's a question no one has asked yet, and I feel compelled to do so. Why do you feel that you absolutely, positively must have an A in this class and that a B+ is not sufficient?

You will find that schools are a lot more forgiving of mistakes early in your college career. I did well in all my classes save calculus. I got a D in first semester calc and a C+ in calc II. I retook calc I and had it not been for a my group members forgetting part of the project I would have gotten an A (0.84% away...grrr). Anyway. My bad grades were only first year. The upside is that pharm schools like to see you progress from those grades, showing you can overcome challenges and adversity, so make an effort to be above average from now on. On your application they will either ask you to discuss anything else you'd like to tell them or any discrepancies in your transcript (really they can be one and the same). Here is where you bring your W to their attention, BUT! make sure to explain what you learned from it and how you grew as a student afterward. Also, don't be so quick to blame the teacher. Yes, I have had 5h1tty teachers (Calc Physics I) but if you put in the time you can many times teach yourself (along with tutoring or office hours) stay motivated!

I concur from my own experience. My second semester in college, there was a class that I ended up getting a B+ in. At the time, I was one of those strictly raised students who thought that anything less than a 4.0, and I had no shot of getting into pharmacy school (thank you, everybody who told me exaggerated stories about people getting rejected from UB...jerks). Anyways, I digress. I got a B+ in a class my second semester, and I was furious/upset/a myriad of other emotions. I thought I was really in trouble, and even went so far as to consider retaking the course. But, to be perfectly honest, I came to the realization that perfection isn't necessary, and that B+ is just fine. There are many science courses you will have to take throughout your pre-pharmacy career; one B+ is nothing to lose sleep over. If you're really worth your salt as a potential pharmacist, you can overcome that easily. Just apply yourself and try to do the best you can. In the grand scheme of things, the difference between a B+ and an A isn't going to be the difference between you getting into pharmacy school or not.

Who knows, maybe you'll end up getting an A anyway, I know I had a class or two where I was sure I would end up getting a B for the course, only to find out that I had somehow managed to get an A.

Report your professor. You will make a lot of students' lives easier. Multiple reports from multiple semesters will surely get him/her fired.

Thanks for all of the advise guys ... I think I'll just work my butt off and get that B+ ... there's still one more exam and the final, of course ...

But basically this guy messes around during lecture and then gives ridculous exams that are far too long, in my opinion, to finish in 50 minutes .... I mean the class average for the first exam was 64% .. compare that with the other class that had a 90% class average for exam 1 ...

I've had instructors like that, too.

Is there anything he doesn't cover in class and that isn't in the book and that does appear on the test?

If not, then you can just study the book thoroughly, which you should be doing anyway, and circumvent the need to get all of your information from lecture. I mean, that is, if he's horsing around and such and you're not really learning anything from lecture anyway.

An average of 64% is not that far removed from the typical bell distribution of grades (70%). If the class average was closer to 50%, that'd be much more questionable in my opinion. A 64% class average tells me that the majority of the students in the class expect an easy exam because he fools around in class and they don't read their books (because other classes give a lot of data for the test in class, but his doesn't).

During my UG, almost all, if not all, of my classes' exams were 65-75% class average, with ranges of 20ish-mid 90s with very few 100s and very few <20s, which would hold accurate to a Bell distribution.

I have 4 W(s), applied near deadline and got accepted....Don't worry one W will not even matter as long as your overall GPA is good.

you r in your first year? how bad could your frst sem. be that u need to drop a B+? if this is only your 2nd sem., im guessing u havent even taken the majority of the pre-reqs yet, so no need to drop, if you are going to do anything, i would RE-TAKE the courses u messed up in your first sem. instead of dropping

It officially is now ... for our second exam anyway ...

Once again thanks for all of the advise ... I really appreciate it ...

Thanks

Keep the B and move forward... Is it a major science class..

are you seriously thinking about withdrawing from a B+ ?!?! My first year was alot worse with 2 Cs and i got in fine... perfectionism is a disorder man

No, it is speech class. I got B+ for my first speech. it is 15% and i got 6/10 for my quiz. it's 10%... So i dont know what to do.
P/s Is it different between Science classes and Other classes.
