Hello everyone! So I’m a rising junior in college and I wanted to ask if my science gpa or my grades can still allow me to get accepted in dental school. I messed up my freshman year and ended up have 3 C’s (Biology, Calc 1, and Calc 2) sophomore year I ended up having all A’s my first semester and one B in my second semester. Here’s the stats (we don’t have weighted grades btw):

Semester 1:
Biology - Genes and Evolution: C
Gen Chem 1: B
Bio Lab: A
Calculus 1: C

Semester 2:
Gen Chem 2: B
Chem Lab: A
Calculus 2: C
Bio Lab: A

Semester 3:
Biology - Cells/Proteins: A
Organic Chemistry 1: A
Organic Chemistry Lab 1: A

Semester 4:
Biology - Anatomy and Physiology: A
Organic Chemistry 2: A
Organic Chemistry Lab 2: B
Bio Lab: A

With an overall science gpa of 3.3
I’m hoping to get A’s in my other science courses but I was wondering if I have any shot of dental school with what I currently have or if my C’s completely screwed me over. I hoping that since I have an upward trend but idk. Honestly I just didn’t know how to study and didn’t put much effort my freshman year cause I didn’t even know what I wanted. I’m hoping to take a gap year and I’m currently studying for the DAT hoping to have a high score. I’m also hoping to rack up on hours and volunteering to make up for those C’s.

While you aren't listing your non-science classes, I presume you did well (no C's there). From what I can see, you're doing well. I don't know if you plan to take recommended courses that your dental schools would like you to take to further demonstrate your ability to learn more complex material. TLDR: you're fine from what I can see from your self-disclosed grades.

Yes in my non science courses I have no C’s fortunately! And I will be taking in the future biochemistry, physics (1+2), biochemistry lab, a chem, p chem, a chem lab, anatomy (1+2), microbiology, and stats. I’m hoping to get good grades in those classes now that I’ve learned how to properly study and manage my time. I’m still debating if I should take the dat this spring or wait because as I mentioned I’ll be taking a gap year.

it's likely easier to take it while the material is fresher in your mind than to wait another year and have to relearn everything...

try to get as close to 4.0 as you can and not get any c's and you still have a chance...

Ok thank you! This semester I’m taking biochemistry and physics and I’ll use dat destroyed and bootcamp to study!

It was a different time (2017-2018) but I had a 3.3 overall GPA and just over a 3.0 science GPA and still got accepted to 2 dental schools. I did get a 24 AA on the DAT and did a 1 year Masters program (so that helped separate me out from other candidates), but yeah it's possible with a lower GPA. Obviously try your best to get a 4.0 the rest of school but don't beat yourself up at this point. It's still possible to get into dental school as long as you work hard.

Good luck!
