Hi all,

I live in NYC and am a career-changer. I work full-time, but I have about 6 weeks off from work. I'm really interested in women's health, like Planned Parenthood type of work, but unfortunately can't commit the 3 month duration right now. Does anyone know of any women's / free clinic that I can volunteer with during my time off?

Thanks a lot!

most women's clinics in your area (include planned parenthood) should let you do clinic escort volunteering without any long term commitments. at least where i am from they are always looking for more people.

I volunteered at Planned Parenthood (in NY but not NYC) for two years during college. I remember the commitment only being 2-4 times a month (something like that) for a minimum of x months (I assume 3 based on your post). Unless the city has different requirements for their volunteers, you can easily volunteer there as much as you want for the next 6 weeks and then just whenever you can 2-3 times a month for the remaining time you want to work there.

I could only volunteer on weekends for the first few months I was there so I just went two Saturdays a month and once I had more availability I went during the week as well.

Obviously there are other clinics you can work at but having volunteered there myself, I can tell you it's a great place to be 🙂

Thanks, guys!

@Heliscomo - what was your experience like? Also, what would you recommend the best way be to apply? I've submitted an online application, which surprisingly was quite extensive. Is it good to cold-call as well?

Thanks again.

I did the online application and heard back pretty quickly from the centers I applied to, so I would say you're probably good to go with that. You could try calling, I never did it because I heard back but I bet it won't hurt.

My experience was great. I worked in the recovery room on days where procedures (terminations of pregnancy) were performed and it was an amazing experience. I got to shadow the OB/GYNs, work really closely with nurses, take vital signs, see the whole process really. I also got to see some counseling.

I think if you are really proactive and make it known that you're going into a medical career they are even more helpful. it's a great organization

another unique experience I got was canvassing (sp?). Since Planned Parenthood has obvious political ties and issues surrounding it constantly, they are active in canvassing in the streets and at events. I went to a music festival one summer and asked for signatures for a petition while handing out free condoms. it was definitely interesting haha

Does anyone else have any recommendations for me here? I haven't had any luck - have tried cold calling multiple orgs / applied to PP / submitted a dozen apps.

Thank you!
