the turtleneck is the redish color. one suit is black pinstripe, i posted earlier on this thread. the other suit is just black. i'm worried the michael stars is too casual.

IMO I like the turtleneck but if your suit is very simple then it may be too causal. If you have a more stylish cut suit then it would work well

i think the michael stars shirt would be fine, but those shine shirts are REALLY shiny. i would go to the michael stars website and order the shirt in a normal material. they're having free shipping during the month of october, i can send you the email if you PM me yours.

the white dot shirt is cute! i might have to go get that 🙂

thanks 🙂. i know theyre shiny, but it isnt toooo shiny in person. maybe i will order it in regular in a different color also though, i love michael stars shirts.

I just bought a second suit...it was on sale and I couldn't help myself.

Anyways, it came with a long sleeved, silky, collared shirt. I know that for men, the cuff of the shirt should stick out a little from the jacket. Does this also apply to womens' suits?

I have ridden and competed on horseback all my life and our show jackets always had a little bit of the sleeve of the shirt poking out. Consequentially when I bought my suit I really felt like I had to have some color down by my wrists; and so I bought a shirt that did this. I think it is nice and love the punch of color, but I realize that many women avoid this all together simply by buying a sleeveless blouse or something like it.

I am actually writing this in my suit! My university is having a practice interview day today and while it is geared more towards people looking for jobs I am looking forward to being questioned by someone I don't know.

TIP: Ladies, make sure you seriously test drive your suit before your interview. I thought everything was all set with mine and realize when walking today that my tried and true black heels slip all over the place with my tights (so I quickly went to my lab and grabbed some gauze to stuff them with, of course!). I have always worn them either barefoot or with thick trouser socks and I guess these tights are just too slippery. I also realized that I have a small rip in my skirt that was not there when I bought it that I need to address asap!!!

Any thoughts ladies??😀

i brought a purse, you might not need a portfolio bc many schools give you a packet or folder that you can keep all your stuff in. but if you have makeup/wallet etc i would bring a purse, just make sure it matches your suit!!

i've seen people carrying purses or portfolios...i really don't think it matters. what do you feel more comfortable carrying? i personally am carrying a large purse...it can be a pain but it holds my laptop and all my junk on the plane :]

i dont agree that the purse has to match...as in black with a black suit, navy with a navy suit??

i have a black purse that i carry around. its nice and big and fits everything i need including a book if i have downtime.

Hello ladies,
I'm loving this thread btw. I have my first interview coming up in a few days and I wanted to get your opinions. What do you think of this suit from Calvin Klein? I have tan skin (I'm hispanic) and I'm a little larger up top. I'm getting it tailored and I'm not sure if I should add a button on the bottom. I'm not sure what shirt to wear underneath either? Any advice is appreciated!

I prefer a more structured, fitted look, so I would definitely add another button, and make sure that the highest button is right under the bust.

I love the polka-dot shirt! The turtleneck is nice too, but I tried one on with my suit the other day, and my bf thought it looked too conservative/school-marmish.

Yeah, what do you mean by "matches"? I have a purple bag that is just the right shape and size for folders and papers. I get compliments on it all the time (including at my linkage interview last spring), so I'm sticking to it. The color is fun!

Haha I was reading it yesterday too. SO crazy!! 😱

How did the sizing work out for you? I am always hesitant to buy clothes online... I have had to return many things to Victoria's Secret.

if it helps, im 5'7 and about 115lbs and i get an XS

hey guys, do you think there are any nailpolish colors that are unacceptable?

i just got bored and painted my nails a dark red color with tiny red sparkles. i was wondering if i should just be safe and take the colors off before my interview on tues?

yea, jus take them off to be safe

I don't see a problem with the dark red, not sure about the sparkles though... depends on just how sparkly I guess. 🙂 I was actually planning to get a manicure today for my interview Monday, because my cuticles are in bad shape. I think a dark red or maroon is classic and shouldn't be an issue, but if you're worried, you could use something "natural," like a pale pink or peach.

at Madison interview, there was a girl that was very well dressed. She wore an olive/brownish long sleeved suit, no stripes, with matching pants. I thought it looked much better than girls who wore skirts. She was very good looking too 🙂

basic fashion rules- no brown with black, bright crazy colors, etc. my biggest pet peeve is a girl with a black suit who had a brown coach purse with all those C's on it and torquoise handles, ugh!

Druzie, i really like the purple bag idea. I would totally stick with it...

I ended up getting a medium-gray Tahari suit from Macy's on sale! It was a great deal. Also, I found the only fitted blouses that actually fit me in the bust/shoulder area at Van Heusen. You can find great sales on blouses/shirts online or at outlet stores. For shoes, I originally bought these great pumps but found that at hour 3 I started limping, so I decided to go with my ankle boots that looked great that I knew were comfortable. Remember that look is important, but you need to be comfortable as well. I also decided to go with a really slimline tote, so I have a place to stash my lip gloss, water bottle, mints, and granola bars.

One thing I noticed and I would remind all of us women, please please don't wear a suit that's too tight! It just looks really bad, and I can't imagine it's too comfortable.

what websites/stores did you use to buy your bags. I'm not sure if I want a tote or portfolio bag yet but I'm having trouble finding any to look at.

haha its ok druzie, our iterviews arent on the same day

and i got my bag at macy's

Oh shoot. I probably totally de-anonymized myself. 😱

Did I say purple? I meant a brown Coach bag with turquoise handles. 😛

 now I know who you are !

i got one bag at nordstrom (its kate spade but on sale) and the other is a coach tote bag i got for christmas. here's another question: should i buy a bag thats not expensive so it doesn't look like im obsessed with clothes?

People are entitled to their tastes. Don't stress about it.

I hope the "classic" colours are okay, I read somewhere else that they weren't and I was worried. My nails look awful if they're not painted dark. Mostly because they've been stained silly from repeated applications of....dark nail polish. I do use a base coat every time, but it doesn't seem to help. 😳 I will certainly go for a red over my token black however.

haha darn, i was hoping to have an excuse for a new bag! lol.

As it gets colder, what are you ladies wearing over your suit?

Calvin Klein black wool knee-length peacoat, got from Burlington Coat Factory for like $100 (should have been a lot more) w/ black gloves and a nice offwhite cashmere scarf... very warm 🙂

i have a black pea coat but my suits are grey and brown. It is a major fashion no-no to wear a brown suit with a black coat? Is there a color I could get that would match both suits?

yes, and white or blue

No one on the adcom will care what color coat you wear or whether it matches or clashes with your suit. (In all likelihood, they'll never see your coat as you will have hung it in a coat closet in the adcom office.)

If you are buying a coat just for an interview; think again.

i'd say no, it should be fine... black and brown actually CAN work together if you have an accessory that ties them together. and like LizzyM said, no one will see it. if you're really worried, i'd say buy a grey or cream coat. the juniors dept of nordstrom has some decent ones that are not too expensive. This one is sooo cute and comes in tons of colors.

Ok, a couple questions:

1. If I am wearing a sweater under my jacket, is it inappropriate to leave it untucked so that some of it shows under the bottom of my jacket? I like the way it looks, but would I be safer to just tuck it in?
2. Is it bad to carry a "trendy" bag rather than a basic tote? I was planning on bringing this bag:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2939098...Y&origin=category&searchtype=&pbo=6013446&P=2
Would that be okay to bring with me?

Thanks!

bag is reallly cool! but i would tuck in the sweater

Ok, thats what I thought. Thanks, girls 🙂.

Did anyone consider not wearing a suit? I'm thinking about a skirt and jacket... same color tone, but different brands/materials. Looks very professional but more creative and sophisticated than a suit... or should I stay on the safe side with a suit?

Safe side, definitely. Even if your outfit looks classy, if you stand out too much, the adcom will only remember you as "that woman who wore that outfit" and not "that woman who did that research project" or whatever.

A skirt with a jacket is fine, as long as the skirt is knee-length.

I think that you'd be fine. Interviewers are unlikely to even notice something so subtle and unlikely to think poorly of you if they do.

I'll say it again, the only overt comment I've ever seen/heard about an applicant's clothing was an instance where the applicant was wearing a top that was so revealing that everyone who interacted with her that day was very uncomfortable.

is wearing a white shirt and black pant suit with black heels wayyyy too boring?

Yes... if you don't want boring try changing the white shirt to a color =)

ive seen some crazy colors and it doesnt look bad. not neon green but like bright reddish colors and blues and whatnot
