about to purchase a suit. went to the store and tried it on and loved it!!! now just wondering about the shirt beneath the jacket. my suit is a light gray.

what do you guys think about this shirt?

http://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=6712670120002&cid=16814

or should I go something more classic like this?

http://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=6712920120002&cid=16814

and are these shoes too unprofessional? im a size 11 so I'm having trouble finding comfortable, classy, mid-heel shoes.

I Love the look of the first blouse & those shoes are professional.

Don't mind me. I am simply here to e-flirt with some sexy pre-med ladies.

So I got a more conservative suit, and I love it even more than the other. 🙂

Skirt: http://www.thelimited.com/detail/sculptural-pencil-skirt/7265956

Jacket: http://www.thelimited.com/detail/bordered-peak-lapel-jacket/2518550

Now to find a shirt and shoes. Any color ideas for the shirt that would go with the grey/brown of the suit?

That's a really nice suit! I also got my suit from The Limited, although its a slightly different style. Mine is more of a dark charcoal grey, and I really love it.

As for colors for a shirt, maybe a dark brown or beige if you don't want bright colors, or maybe like a burgundy, maroon, or dark plum type color?

Hi ladies (and occasional dude),

FYI - Banana Republic is having an online only "Work Essentials" sale until July 26.. it's 30% off suits, shirts, separates, shoes, etc.

And until the 29th they have free shipping for over $100 orders also.

I already have my suit (from J. Crew) but if I didn't I would definitely take advantage of this BR sale... so hopefully someone else can benefit!!

my suit is SO similar to that! although it's a bit old, so i may shop for another one. but we could be twinsies! i'm going with red shoes, etc if i wear that one.

Dumb question but what do men typically wear to interviews? I would assume a suite with jacket but I didnt know if any other guy wore anything different.

Sorry for highjacking the thread ladies

There's a men's interview clothing thread... hooray for the search function.

Give me a sec and I'll edit this post to contain the link to it.

Edit: And here it is: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=552578

Dark suit. Wear anything else and you would stick out.

at ksmi: shorter jackets that hit at top of or at hip make shorter girls look taller. Ditch the longer jacket. ok so for my question: i have unruly curly hair couple inches past my shoulders. I like it and i kinda wanted to wear it open with a headband or something for interviews but now im rethinking. I can straighten it and ppl say i look more mature with it but then i feel i kinda lose some of my personality and uniqueness 🙁 I dunno what to do... Whatcha think?

wear it however you feel most confident.
honestly i don't think they care about how your hair is done unless it looks like a rat's nest

Whatever makes you turn heads. Adcoms like attractive and stylish people just as long as they wear the standard interview uniform and can speak with confidence. I see medical students and residents with fauxhawks (guys) and emo hair with the side swept bangs (girls) sometimes, especially in the metro areas.

So what's the general consensus on camis under suits? Are they ok to wear as long as they're not too low-cut? I'm asking because I'm pretty tiny and petite, and button up shirts always find a way to bunch up and look just plain bad on me. So I found a two nice blouses, but I was just wondering for days I don't want to wear them, if a simple colored cami would look good. Something like this:

http://www.thelimited.com/detail/seamless-scoop-cami/4987601

I tried it on, and it's not too low cut...no clevage. It looks lower on the manikin.

Have you tried to buy petite dress shirts? I'm petite with a short torso and they work on me. You are going to have to wear dress clothes in medschool so you need to figure out at least one outfit now. Camis are a definite NO. I've also heard old-school attendings who don't like pink btw. If you're going for a pop of color do something less feminine like a blue or a green or a red. I've also heard that skirts on women are appreciated (knee length of course).

i would leave the curly hair down if youre so used to it and it looks nice 🙂

also, in case anyone finds this useful, but i didnt take off my suit jacket, not even once. I wore a very classic suit my mom had from about 10 years ago that she bought for job interviews. the classic style hasn't change at all and i comfortably wore it. if anything, i was a lot more comfortable in that than i think i would have been in a trendy, newer style suit, but thats just me.
it was a black wool suit and i wore either a beige silk blouse or a burgundy VS cotton blouse underneath and black ~2.5 inch pumps from Zappos. I kept my hair up only because i am much more used to that.

hope this helps someone 🙂

that was useful, thank you!

also, I think I'm just gonna see which style I like my hair with my suit. plus I realized my straight hair doesn't get worse and worse throughout the day like my curly hair does lol

I ended up finding some nice blouses instead of the camis. I actually already had one, and had the camis as backup, but I did find two more. I have one dark blue blouse, one dark teal sweater top, and one light turquoise/blueish blouse. Two of them are XS from The Limited, the only ones that fit me there, but they are professional looking. The other one is from the petite section of Macys. For some reason most petite button ups still look odd fitting on me, like I borrowed my mother's clothing. lol. The only button ups that fit me well are from the juniors section and those at a few select stores. I couldn't find any nice ones that go with my suit, and I prefer blouses, so I think this worked out nicely. Still, I did return the camis. Thanks for the advice everyone.

That's what I bought, except a pantsuit.

Skirts are better. You'll score extra points with the male interviewers. Trust me on this. There is an unspoken hotness factor.

I don't know if you have spoken about this, but what is the consensus on bags? purses? I know i will have a bunch of papers, but i will also have other random things like phone, keys, sanitary stuff... e.t.c. so a folder may not be sufficient.

so what are you guys doing for that?

I just went out a bought a nice but simple Nine West bag from Kohls. It's professional looking, and big enough to hold a folder/papers, as well as keys, phone, wallet, etc. I couldn't find a picture online, but it's more like a business tote/folder. I think it should be ok if you bought a simple bag with you.

I usually keep my hair some weird color, but i'm guessing that's not so kosher to do at a med school interview, but I don't really want to dye it back to brown or black. I was just thinking of keeping it blonde (insert joke about asian with blond hair here), and not dying it for a while. Should I suck it up and dye it a normal color? Or as long as i dress professionally, does it not matter too much?

to runawayclock I think you should suck it up and color it. the blonde look may go well with some adcoms, but it may not go well with others. why risk it?

to snitch, thanks for the idea, but i am having a hard time visualizing the bag. anyone have a picture?

So I couldn't find a picture of the particular bag I got, but it's something along the lines of this:

http://www4.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6.aspx?DeptID=50434&CatID=66376&GrpTyp=PRD&ItemID=16d6452&attrtype=&attrvalue=&CMID=50434|66371&Fltr=&Srt=&QL=F&IND=27&cmVirtualCat=&CmCatId=50434|66371|66376

http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=363501&CategoryID=46028

The one I got is black leather type material, Nine West and slightly a different shape/size than these, but they're along the same style. I figure it's professional looking, but practical for what I need it for..not too big, but big enough to fit everything. Kohls actually some great deals the day I went, and I found some good bags to choose from. Although, you could probably go with any style of bag as long as it looks professional. Hope that helped! 🙂

👍👍 Thanks so much, that does look very proffessional, I really like the black ones, I will look out for something similar. 👍👍

Hi everyone,

I have a question about appropriate dress for women at med school interviews. I bought a great calvin klein skirt suit when I interviewed in 2008, but since then I've lost some weight and got a new hairstyle so the suit doesn't look too great on me now. It actually looks downright stupid (my sister and mom couldn't stop laughing at me when I tried it on)

Here's my question, are sheath dresses completely not an option for women? Where I'm interning now, I wear this really nice sheath dress when I go to congressional briefings and other big shot DC things. It looks kinda like the image below, but it hits below the knee. I look very professional in it, but I'm wondering if its completely inappropriate. Should I invest in just tailoring my old suit, buy new separates, or "risk it" with my dress?

Thanks!

This is the standard interview uniform for women.

Thanks TopSecret 🙂

I think I'm gonna just suck it up and go to H&M to buy a black jacket (I already have a black professional skirt from there).

I think you could totally wear that dress if you bought a professional suit blazer (in black). There are plenty of dress-suits like this out there.

I got my jacket at H&M and i love it. they had at least 4 types of black jackets. I was dissappointed in their choice of shirts though 🙁

why dont you wear a black suit jacket on top of that sheath dress?

Dressing conservatively is the key. This means no visible cleavage or belly.

So I just bought Banana Republic's signature gray suit

http://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/outfit.do?cid=41699&oid=OUT15169

And two pairs of black shoes

http://www.dsw.com/dsw_shoes/catalog/product.jsp?productRef=SEARCH&category=&prodId=187934
http://www.shoes.com/Shopping/ProductDetails.aspx?p=65342&pg=1014446&icid=tsl
(this last one isn't the exact one, but it was the closest I could find)

I always wear flats because I'm pretty tall, so I'm not used to heels at all. I picked these two because they were comfortable and not too high. Any opinions on which would look better? And does gray suit + black shoes seem too boring? I'll definitely try to add some color with my shirt

that mootsie tootsie thing is open toed. i say no.

I had knee surgery a while back, and I am still not able to walk in heels of any height because my quad is still extremely atrophied.

Is it okay to wear flats with a pant suit? I'd suck it up and wear the heels but I don't want my first impression to be of me biting the dust in front of everyone 🙁

I've seen women wearing flats with both skirt suits and pant suits and look completely professional. Just buy some nice dressy flats not casual ones. I'm wearing flats with my pant suit if I get any interview because I cannot wear heels in general.

You definitely should NOT wear heels due to your medical condition. Good luck on healing!

I've noticed that everyone has been getting skirts. Is there usually a preference for skirts over pants?

I hear a lot on here about skirts being better than pants. I personally dislike skirts... particularly walking around in skirts, like on a tour of a medical school. >.> I bought an awesome pantsuit, and I think it really works for me. If you feel confident and professional in what you're wearing, it shows. Whether it's pants or a skirt.
