Hey all!....Im wondering if anyone has any clue about masters level gpas. My undergrad gpa was not sparkling...but i went and got a 3.77 in a masters in biomedical science (which didn't really make much of a change to my overall gpa)....
Also.....i went back to school after graduation from undergrad to complete my prerequisites and completed them all with a 3.9 (which also didn't affect my overall gpa)....

-I guess my question is this: Do the schools prefer the masters gpa over the undergrad or do they simply look at the overall scores?
Thanks!

TS 21/PA 20/AA 19

How low is your overall and SGPA now ?
How many course have you taken when you came back to school after the masters?
How many years ago did you take those original pre-req courses?

I have spoken to at least 10 schools about this. Some just look at the GPA and they tell you that over the phone ( call the ones in your list).

Some other tell you that they look at each year and ... However, I personally DO NOT believe them.

I think they get too many applications and will not have time to look at each year and ...

It is unfortunate but I think it is what it is.

Hmmmm....i have been trying to get into dental school since 2005....this is my 4th app cycle......from 2005-2007 i took all of the prerequisite courses and, specifically to those courses, i got a 3.9......Then in 2009 i did the masters.....just graduated in june....3.77 in the program.....
BCP is 3.35
sGPA is 3.09
cum GPA is 2.94
***like i said....not really sparkling....but there's not really a lot that anyone can do to increase their overall GPA once you've been done with school......(too many credits to make any difference)
-My thing is this: I have shown an overall positive trend since 2005 and I have over 5000 dental office hours...Let me know what you think
Thanks

I know exactly how you feel. It is frustrating as hell since you have shown so much improvement and ... You are basically a new person who is demonstrating that he can handle the demands of a dental school and is smart enough to get in and ...

I wish you a best of luck and I hope you get in and manage to follow you dream.
I really mean it.

Did you receive many interview invites in the last cycles? If so, how many?
If you got interviews last year but still didn't get in then maybe its not numbers that are keeping you from getting in.

I know a couple of people who had low GPAs (lots of Cs, Ds, and Fs) but they got in due to having a 21AA or higher on their DAT, did well in their last year of college, and got accepted into dental school. (but that was when they applied two to three years ago...every year it gets more competitive).

5000 hours wow that's a lot of hours. Have you tried contacting the schools regarding feedback? They usually provide feedback to possible reapplicants in May so they can prepare for the next cycle (but i don't know how helpful that is since the next cycle application opens up in June).

You should be fine. Just prepare for your interviews. and Good luck. 🙂

hey jat14!...thanks for the input.....i spoke with an admissions officer at oregon and pittsburg a couple of years ago and they both suggested a post bac.....(my old advisor at ASU who was an admissions officer b4 as well)...so i did......i had one interview last year at midwestern but was rejected outright....even though I know i did well during the interview.
I have a "feeling" that this is my year tho......i have a lot of schools giving my positive feedback......still waiting for interviews tho.....(im having them wait for my new DAT scores to update).....
Most of the professors and people i speak with say that im good b/c of the masters gpa (which apparently is a very big deal to dental schools).....just not sure and wanted to know if anyone had any ideas about it.....
Yeah....the 5000 hours is a lot...i worked in 4 different dental offices and have a good clinical foundation from which to build
Dentistry is really all i want to do
Thanks!

Pinhi, you are truly inspiring...

If you had a 20 in or AA, would that make a difference?

Just wondering because I'm going to be taking your route too...low gpa, etc. I'm working on getting into a masters program now and it's going to be a tough uphill climb.

good luck on interviews.

Thank you! 🙂 thats very nice!.....i just retook the DAT and got the AA 19...i know it kinda sux....but i feel that my other scores are strong.....i ended up with the 3.77 in the masters....which i think will help a lot.
I have to say that the post bac was a fantastic experience and i learned so much. I thought i was ready b4 it....(i wasnt)....
good luck to you on the masters search as well as in the program. Stick it out...it'll all come together if you really want it. 😉

gawd, I hope I get in within 3 years...I don't want to retake the DAT.

I was just tutoring a friend on the sciences and PAT, and wow...I felt nausea.
