I see only Nate under OUCOM. Anyone else heard word from them?? I am running down to that mailbox every day looking for something from them. Do they send something to you even if they don't want you?

i wouldn't worry about it too much dancote i just started at OUCOM on Tuesday and they just gave us the paper for anyone wanting to be a student host today. It says that interviews and the like don't start until October 8th so I wouldn't stress out about it too much. It seems that OU takes a bit to get going on their invites and such so just relax. I would also think that they would send you something if they don't want to interview you. You could always call the admissions office if you are really freaking out about it.

I got a secondary from them sometime ago as well, but I'm not returning it. It has a contract in it that you have to sign before they will interview you that says you'll practice 5 years in the state of Ohio after post graduate training. I'm sure that is why there aren't alot of people posting.

Yea, I'm also not returning the secondary. The contract turned me off a little, but what I heard about this years board pass rate is what really turned me off. Supposedly, the pass rate was in the low 80's... can any OU-COM students confirm/deny?

Sorry, but you got it way wrong. The overall pass rate for ALL DO schools was in the 80's. The OU-COM pass rate this year was 94.6%.

I don't know why so many rumors are spread about OU-COM. It's probably because very few people from OU-COM post and it's easier to spread misinformation.

5 years? That's insane! It makes the $40,000+/yr out-of-state tuition at WVSOM seem a small price to pay in comparison.

After reading this thread I decided to look up my info about this school. Now, I understand why they want a 5-year contract to subsidize the low tuition. However, they are charging out-of-state tuition comparable to a private school anyway! I still really like the school but this has baffled me.
I will be clearing that up when I go to my interview on the 8th but from what I see it doesn't make sense.

A few key points to remember about OU-COM if you're from out of state:

- You can apply for in-state tuition after your first year. In other words, you only pay out-of-state tuition for MS-1, and you have the option to become an Ohio resident during that year and switch over to the lower in-state tuition (you must satisfy some requirements to prove residency, but it's not hard). Your contract will still apply, but you'll be paying less.

- If you want to do an osteopathic residency program, especially in primary care, the contract is really a non-issue. I'm planning to apply to osteopathic internal medicine residencies in Ohio anyway. If you complete one in a CORE hospital, you'll satisfy the contract's requirements. In other words, a 3 year residency at a CORE hospital (in primary care) will satisfy the 5 year service requirement. If you do a CORE residency in a non-primary care hospital, then it's year-for-year. For example, a 4 year ob/gyn CORE residency will still leave 1 year left of service (you can always "buy out" of the contract, and you'll only "owe" 1 year to OU-COM).

- Don't let the contract scare you. It's really not that big of a deal. The CORE hospitals are not all small and rural. Most of them are large urban/suburban hospitals and some have been named "Best Hospitals" by USNews (in some specialties, not overall). You'll have plenty of residencies to choose from.

I sent them my secondary weeks ago. I called them about 2 weeks ago and they told me my file was complete and being reviewed. I really hope I get an interview with them because the program sounds great. No letter yet again today!! I am also waiting for a letter from WVSOM as my interview was on Monday 8/30. It was cool because 3 of the 5 of us knew of each other from SDN.

I visited Athens late June and talked to the admissions staff about my application. I was really impressed by how nice everyone was there and how many minorities seemed to be around during the summer. Of course that may have to do with their summer program. I was just wondering if anyone else has toured the campus and what they thought of the facilities in comparison to other schools. The only two schools I've looked at have been NOVA and OU and I have to say I was more impressed with OU.

I released my interview and withdrew my application, hope someone else more willing to accept a 5-year contract can take advantage of it.

Very cool, thank you Nate! I don't know if I'll ever get a letter from them, but I have a feeling it may yet happen. I hold the school high on my list. I wonder if maybe I sent in another letter if that would get them to consider me? I only sent one of my D.O. letters, but I have 2 of them.

Wish I knew what they were going to do with me, if they are going to reject me than do it now! Put me out of my misery. Just kidding. I am sure they are busy looking over their in-state applicants and may wait on others of us.

Do let them know of your interest in attending OU-COM! That might tip the scales in your favor.

Also, don't think that they go through in-state applicants first. I was in the very first group of interviewees last year, and I wasn't an Ohio resident at the time (there was another person from out of Ohio that day interviewing too).

OU-COM is an awesome school. Good luck in your application!

I didn't post it yet, but I have an interview with them on the 8th of oct. I did go and visit OU along with 5 other midwest schools this last spring with my wife to see how we'd handle such a different setting. We live in SF now. We both really liked what OU has to offer, including nice master's programs for her. That being said the contract is a problem, even though I understand it's only 3 years for people completing certain residencies. But the school simply has a ton of really cool programs.

I just called to ask if my file was complete and the lady told me they wanted me to come for an interview on October 28th. Interested in being a host for me? She said they might change it to October 22nd though.

Either way, if someone at OU wants to let me stay with them, I'd appreciate it 🙂

Thanks
Adrian
