Word Limits on SOPs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
10-20 words give or take should be ok given that the content justifies the excess. However, you should know that programs look for your ability to summarize and distill your ideas and present them in an efficient and succinct manner. It is a lot to cram in as little as 250-500 words but all your fellow applicants are facing the same task. Adcoms read 200-300 statements and your job would be to stand out amongst them in the given parameters.

I also struggled in my SOP, it was a character limit, so it was even more of a PITA. I actually completed my statement to the very last character. While I could not exceed the limit due to their software, I figured that exceeding it would only show that I can't follow simple instructions. I guess it really depends on who is reading the SOP though. I spent a 1:9, writing:editing ratio.

It's a skill you'll have to develop in clinical psych. Internship application essays all have a 500 word limit.

Is it a bad idea to submit a statement of purpose that exceeds a stated word limit on a clinical psychology doctoral application? I just find it hard to believe that a program would expect you to address "your academic objectives, research interests, and career plans. Also discuss your related qualifications, including collegiate, professional, and community activities, and any other substantial accomplishments not already mentioned on the application" in 250-500 words.

Hey there... I provided some suggestions in this thread:
