Somethings off by an order of 10

A. 900
B. 850
C. 800
D. 960
E. 940

This worded weirdly. I'm thinking 960 (d). 1000 East coast dentists - 40 female east coast dentists = 960 East Coast Male dentists

this is just quick from the top of my head - im sure there might be better ways, and you will have to check these yourself

1. ((Starting salary * 110% ) * 110%) = present salary

2. Total east coasters minus women east coasters = men; 1000-40 = 960

3. Total plants = plants sold + plants he still has
plants sold = 150$/.75
plants he still has = 100

4. Think about it as a fraction: 25/10 ft and 3/15; if you want to compare the two you will have to change the bottom number to 5 or 30. 5 is nice making 12.5lbs/5ft and 1lb/5ft so its a 12.5:1 ratio

5. Speed is distance over time (like miles/hour), so you want to find the total distance and put it over the total time: it went 45 mph for 1 hr, so that is 45 miles of distance and 1 hr of time, and 60mph for .5 hrs so that is 30 miles of distance and .5 hrs of time; (45+30)/(1+.5)

6. The 2:1 ratio means that the total is being divided into 3 parts and the landlord has to pay 3 of them. 350/3 * 2

7. find total area = 16*10*8 and set it equal to the equation for a cubes area (length of side ^3). So really you want to find the cube-root of whatever 16*10*8 is

Sorry this is sloppy! Hope it helps - if not just ask for clarification!

Bob for the first problem why are you multiplying by 110% it should just be 10% did you mean to multiply by 1.10 ????

No it should be 110% (110% ~ 1.10) but what on earth is 271,7180?

Dude you have to double check your typing.

I have a busy day so I'll tackle this either in 2 hours or tomorrow haha.

Bob for the first problem why are you multiplying by 110% it should just be 10% did you mean to multiply by 1.10 ????

Yeah I meant 110% - it takes care of everything in 1 step. You don't have to go *10% and then add or subtract if you just go with 110%, because that is the value you are looking for in the first place.

I want to just make a point that these are full solutions so I give both an answer and the explanation of how to do it. Bob has given both hints and solutions in his reply, a few posts up. I suggest looking there first and trying to solve them on your own. You should refer here if you are absolutely stuck, or if you think you could find a different way to do a problem.

Alright let's do this!

1. Clyde received a 10 % raise in each of the last two years. His present salary is 271,7180. What was his starting salary?

A. 18.000
B 19.000
C 20.000
D. 21.350
E. 26,354

Solution: Clyde gets a 10% increase once a year over two years. Let x be the original salary. Then 1.1x = the salary after 1 year, and 1.1*1.1x = the salary after 2 years. Since 1.1*1.1 = 1.21, we have 1.21x = the salary after two years. I have no idea what 271,7180 means, so look up the real number in your book and divide it by 1.21. That's your answer.

2. At a convention of dentists, 1000 dentists are from the East Coast. One hundred dentists are women; 60 of the women are not from the East Coast. How many male dentists are from the East Coast.

A. 900
B. 850
C. 800
D. 960
E. 940

Solution: There are 1000 dentists from the east coast. There are 100 women and 60 aren't from the east coast. That means 40 women are from the east coast. Since there were 1000 dentists from the east coast and 40 of them are women, we have 1000-40 = 960 male east coast dentists. Answer choice D.

3. A florist bought some paints for $150. He sold enough at 75 cents to meet the cost and had 100 plants left. How many were originally purchased by the florist?

A.150
B. 250
C. 300
D. 350
E. 400

Solution: He sold plants at $0.75 each and made back what he spent on them. So take $150/$0.75 = 200. He sold 200 plants at $0.75 each and made $150. But he has 100 plants left. So he originally bought 200 + 100 = 300. Answer choice C.

4. A lawn fertilizer is most effective if 25 pounds is spread over 10.000 square feet. A weed killer must be mixed with the fertilizer but only 3 pounds should be used on every 15.000 square feet. What should be the ratio be between the fertilizer and the weed killer when mixed?

A. 12.5 to 1
B. 3 to 2
C. 8.33 to 1
D. 5.5 to 1
E. 25 to 3

Solution: If 25 pounds is spread over 10,000 sq ft then 37.5 pounds should be spread over 15,000 sq ft (multiply both by 1.5). So the ratio should be 37.5 to 3, or (dividing) 12.5 to 1. Answer choice A.

5. An auto travels at the average of 45mi/hr for 1 hr and then an average of 60 mi/hr for the next half-hour. What is the average speed for the entire time period in miles/hr ?

A. 47.5
B. 50
C. 52.5
D.55

Solution: The auto goes 45mph for 1 hour = 45 miles. Then 60 mph for 30 minutes = 30 miles. Total distance = 75 miles. Total time = 1.5 hours. Average speed = total distance / total time = 75 / 1.5 = 50 mph. Answer choice B.

6. A tree in an apartment building courtyard died and the cost of cutting down the tree is $350.00. The city will share the cost with the landlord on a 2 to ratio, the landlord paying the larger part. How much will the landlord have to pay?

A. 233
B. 175
C. 117
D.150
E. 210

Solution: I'm going to assume it's a 2 to 1 ratio. Then there are 3 parts (2 + 1). Divide 350 by 3 and get 116.67. Since the landlord is paying for 2 parts, multiply that by 2 and get 233. Answer choice A.

7. A box has the shape of a rectangular solid, with a base measuring 16 inches by 10 inches and a height of 8 inches. What is the approximate length of the sides of a cubic container having the same volume.

A. 9.75
B. 10.00
C. 10.85
D. 12.65
E. 13.15

Solution: This one is simple. First find the area = length*width*height = 16in*10in*8in = 1280 in^3. A cubic container would have all 3 dimensions be equal. So we're looking for the measure of 's' such that s^3 = 1280 in^3. Taking the cube root, we get s ~ 10.86. Answer choice C is closest.
