For those of you that just applied to MHA programs (or currently attending one), how much did work experience factor into your applications? It seems like the top 10 programs require at least 2 years of work experience, with some accepting students straight out of college. The reason why I ask this is because I believe that by the time they look at my application, I'll only have 1 year of work experience, and I'm slightly worried that's not going to be enough.

Hey,
So I am an engineering undergrad from India, and I applied to the MHA program at UNC Chapel Hill which I am sure is a top 10 school. I had a few internships and I had volunteered in managing medical camps by an NGO back here in India, but that's all the work ex I have. In my interview, they did mention that 3/4th of the cohort comes with extensive work ex so the remaining 1/4th should have something strong to offer in their profile. Anyway, I was still picked, against all the odds, and I am pretty sure I will be the youngest in the program with the least work ex probably. I think the quality of work will count more than the quantity or years of work ex.

Thanks for the response! UNC is actually the school that I have in mind for applications, so that's good to hear about your situation! I also wondered if the quality of my work experience would overcome the "quantity" of work experience, which would make sense. Here's to hoping it's good enough for UNC!

Hey! Congratulations !

I am a dental surgeon, from india too, intend to apply for fall2014, since you have been accepted, i am assuming you must be having a fair idea regarding the prospects for international mha graduates. I plan to take an education loan, so it would be really nice if you could guide me , if its advisable to do so and how are the opportunities for international graduates and what are the placement rates and salaries.

Thanks

I got into every school I applied to (JHU, Cornell, GW, Georgetown, Tulane) coming straight from undergrad. In fairness, I had 5 internships during undergrad that were all public health related, but I haven't had a ton of full-term work experience.

Mind sharing your grads/scores?

Im interning at the American Medical Association for the summer, and will hopefully be getting another internship this fall during my senior year elsewhere. Prior to that I worked as a pharm tech for a year. I also have a lot of volunteer health screening experience/shadowing experience. I've also gone on relief trips to Haiti and Sudan.

Would you say thats enough "work experience" ?
