Hey all,

I know medical schools really place an emphasis on leaderships roles, but would being promoted to assistant manager or manager at a dining facility on campus be the leadership they are referring to?

It is leadership, though as Dr Strange points out, it would generally be listed as paid employment on AMCAS. Your activity description is your opportunity to point out the leadership qualities that were required by your job. It is still beneficial to your application.

Yes and no. Traditionally, most people think of "leadership" as a position of power in a student organization. A campus job, while requiring leadership skills, is usually listed as paid employment on AMCAS.

What???
While you may list your assistant managerial position as employment, it IS leadership and it IS the kind of experience adcoms are looking for if you have an actual leadership role such as managing conflict, leading a team of your co-workers, developing strategies for improvement, etc. It doesn't matter if its at a job, a volunteer activity, or a club.

While the leadership tab may have been put on amcas to have an "easy" place for student organization involvement to go, it in NO WAY detracts from the fact that other experiences are indeed leadership.

I never said that it wasn't leadership. I simply pointed out that, for the sake of AMCAS, it's paid employment. It would be weird to list something like this as "leadership."

The OP didn't ask about filling out AMCAS, the op asked if it was leadership that medical schools were looking for. Your answer made it seem like it wasn't "medical school leadership." I didn't want the OP thinking that because you wouldn't call it "leadership" on the application that it wasn't the type of leadership schools were looking for.

BTW, the leadership category is actually Leadership(Not listed elsewhere) implying that its appropriate to have leadership roles in other categories.
