Hopefully I don't get flamed as a D1 but I'm just really curious. Couldn't find any threads on this!

Do dental students who get to specialize work part-time as a GP WHILE they complete their specialization program?

I ask this because if you attend another 3 years of dental school without being able to work, the tuitition and loans would sum up to.............👎

Thanks

Most (if not all?) specialty programs pay a stipend, so you are getting paid something during your specialty training.

Actually, you have to PAY to attend some specialty programs...for example ortho and prosth. I think only the hospital based programs give stipend incentive.

Oral Surgery is most likely a no, but they are hospital based and generally get stipend from what I've heard.

The endo I know moonlighted while he was in school, but that was 20 years ago so who knows now.

that's good news that you get paid

thanks

It depends on your program.

If your program allows moonlighting, get your dental license, find a job and start working.

If your program doesn't allow moonlighting, get your dental license, find a job, start working, and don't let the people who sign your certificate find out.

Some programs like Oral Surgery are so time intensive that it can be impossible to moonlight during clinical years but very doable during the med school years. I didn't have the drive to moonlight during my GPR although I certainly had the time. I've held a few random moonlighting jobs as an ortho resident and would work more if I could find work that fit my schedule outside of the residency. Seems like most offices around here are open during the same time our residency clinic is open. However in larger cities it should be easier to find moonlighting jobs at non-residency times.
