If you worked as a dental assistant in the US prior to starting your IDP training, can you share your experiences? What were your job duties? What were you paid?

I am an orthodontist in private practice in the US and I'm looking for some info prior to hiring an internationally trained dentist in my office. Thanks.

I think you need to hire an ortho assistant. General dental assistants and ortho assistants are different cause they do different things most ortho assistants are required to attend additional classes

Thank you for the reply. Trained assistants in general are tough to find so hiring someone with dental knowledge is a plus for my office. If someone is motivated, we can teach them the ortho assisting part easily if they have the hand skills to do dentistry.

Anyone have any experiences to share? How much were you paid? How many hours? Were you paid as an intern if you were waiting for a work permit?

Interested. Where is your office location?

Personally I didn't have the most positive experience dental assisting prior to going back to dental school, I held 3 jobs for no more than a month, I was way more comfortable working as a pharmacy tech than a dental assistant, however I have a lot of friends who were great assets to their practices and ended up going back as associates after graduation, bottom line it's a very personal thing you just need the right person, I suggest a month or two trial period.
2 of my jobs were part time (about 25 h/w) the 3rd was a full time, salary was a regular assistant starting salary 11-13 $/h, don't really have info about the intern vs work permit question, also keep in mind that the person will probably end up leaving once they get into dental school that could take 1-5 years or even more depending on their motivation and family/personal situation.
All that being said I do encourage all general dentist/specialists to give my fellow international graduates a chance, it could make a lot of difference in their future, good luck
