How stressful/hard/easy is it to maintain As and Bs as a P1 and work as a tech about 10 hours a week? To those who do work, does it seem like you dont have any time for yourself?

I think that it depends on how good you can juggle your time. I work about 6 hours a week doing work-study, and I don't have too much of a problem, unless I have to work the day before an exam (I have to have extra cramming the night before  ). There is a girl in our class that works thirty hours a week, is involved in some organizations on campus, and she has a 3.9 GPA. But she says she's been doing that since undergrad and knows how to plan her time wisely. I just couldn't do that.

i do fine with working one day a week and every other weekend.

P1 year you can probably work up to 20 hours easy. After that I'd keep it under 15 in years 2 and 3. When you get deep into therapeutics, medicinal chemistry, and pharmacology, you don't have much free time.

I work 15 hours a week (more during our breaks). In addition I have a 40 minute commute each way to school (I only mention this because that accounts for another 6 hours a week that could be spent studying or working). I work both weekend days, so that gets a bit tiring (I only took one day off during my last break and it'll be another month before I plan to take some time off). Yes, sometimes I feel like I don't have time for myself, but I just keep cheerign myself on; it's only 2 more years!

Would you guys mind telling me what kind of part-time jobs do you guys have? Working as pharm techs? Office work? McDonalds? 🙂

I am in the same situation as you. I am debating either to commute 45 min (one way) or rent an apartment that’s close from school. I am kind of leading towards having my own place, since commuting almost 2 hours everyday will exhaust me (can affect my studying). What do you recommend?

It depends...

1. Are you single or married. If you're married then you have someone else to consider as well. If we had moved closer to the school then my husband would have had a longer commute every day, versus me having one for 3 years.

2. Do you currently own or rent? If you rent then it is easier to move. We owned our place and really didn't want to sell and buy another place for such a short time.

3. Would you be driving yourself everyday or carpooling? I carpool so although I have a long commute I only drive one week a month which makes it easier. I can rest/study in the car on the other weeks. It's also nice sometiems to have others to quiz you or chat with.

I think I will be getting my pharm intern license as a PI. You can actually use that to get a job at a pharmacy? What kind of responsibilities would you have? I wouldnt know much as a PI.. Any insight would be helpful.. thanks!

an intern can do everything the pharmacist can do...

however as a first year you will probably just be doing tech work

...except final verification on scripts (at least here in AZ).

Cangara-

Just my 2 cents but here goes: I quit a lucrative (relatively) pharmaceutical sales job in anticipation of P-school. I asked around my local university with different professors and explained what my situation would be over the next few years (ie, busy and varying) and looked most of all for flexibility. From posts on this site, it seems a student's schedule can change not only from semester to semester but from week to week while in school.
It was amazing the amount of acceptance and amenability I got from this direct approach. I set up a part time (no benifits though) job that can vary from 8-40 hrs/week. I think this is quite common. I actually had multiple offers. My advice; use your scientific background/credentials. If few or little, exagerate them (then quickly go learn, as non-hard science professors have little anyway... seriously, I had one that was "amazed" by the colorful pH calibration standards). You should look for 1)flexibilty and 2)to be better paid than a pharm tech (unless thats strictly what you want to do).
Good luck.

bbmuffin and pharmaz88 are right

As an intern you can do everything a pharmacist can do under a pharmacist's supervision except for final verification. However, I don't just do "tech" work even as a first year, but that varies by site and preceptor. I do transfers, take new prescriptions over the phone, do C2 inventory and ordering, and some counseling.

I'm going to be entering P1 in the fall. I've done all my pre-reqs without a real pre-pharmacy advisor, so I'm a little clueless on some points. This is obviously the latest of those areas: how do I go about getting a pharmacy intern license? Is this something that is given to all P1 students, or do I have to jump through extra hoops?

As a PS1, my school said, "here fill this out and give it to the state board." And then you're an intern.

ditto - I think you just automatically get one when you start school - no jumping through hoops quite yet!

Good to hear! Thanks!

BTW - "Palmam qui meruit ferat" - do you have some connection to Lord Nelson, or do you just like the motto?

Lord Nelson?? I had to google him to figure out who he was

no no no.. I have a connection to my college - its USC's motto (the school likes to ingrain such trivial things in our undergraduate minds) 😀

Gotcha. Lord Nelson took that as his personal motto (was awarded it?) after the battle of the Nile. It comes from an obscure poem from the 18th century. My guess is that USC took it from Nelson.

I am going to attend USC this August. How many hours did you work as a P1
And do you get paid for this?
