Working at a different instituion with student visa - possible?

Just wondering if and how many international students were able to find employment (research jobs) outside of their home institution for the summer.

I know that the visa says it's not allowed or something, but are there any legal ways around it? E.g. collaboration between 2 schools and having your home institution pay, while you work at the place you want?

I have a professor at UPenn who I wanted to work with for the summer.

Any advice would be great!
