Drop the volunteering when you get the job. It will be pointless to do both. A Cna will count as clinical experience

What's better between CNA and Pateint care technician? Either one I'm going to be doing at hospital.

I think pct. What makes you think you'll be working in the hospital and not a nursing home? Hospital gigs are very competitive where I'm from.

First I applied for paid clinical internship over the summer and applied 2 weeks ago which is open for students who in their junior year. Waiting to hear back because if accepted for internship than I'm not planning on working pct/cna during the summer. If not accepted for internship planning on applying pct/cna positions for summer. If accepted for internship than doing internship this summer and applying pct/cna positions next summer.

I prefer hospital setting. Also have an immediate family member who is attending physician at hospital system I am applying for.

In general how much does having an immediate family member like parent or etc who works where one is applying help in getting the job?

Also when should one begin applying for jobs like cna or pct say if one ideally wants to start working from beginning of may to end of August basically summer months

Relax!

The training alone can take weeks, it may be tough to make it work unless you're planning to continue to work through school. I expect it will be difficult to get hired if you want to only do he job for 2 months after your month of training.

The training for these two positions specifically only requires a class which hospital will provide and not like other positions which require more intensive education and training.

Also position called central sterling process tech not sure if that counts as clinical experience?

I don't know what that means either...maybe lab?

What I'm saying is: I doubt they would use the resources to hire and train you for two months of working. It's a very expensive process to train new hires at McDonalds, let alone in healthcare with HIPAA and CPR training required nearly everywhere. Can I ask why you're seeking this out instead of continuing with volunteering? I'm sure there are volunteer opportunities like hospice or visiting nurses that could be a rewarding clinical exposure, if variety is what you're looking for.

Pick something you're interested in that is a demonstration of commitment to service and stick with it, and at the same time keep the other aspects of your application in order.

I will continue my two hospital volunteer comittments regardless. I'm seeking this out because I want some paid clinical experience.

When applying for those positions they have positions for those jobs that are full time, part time, casual, and etc.

Do you want me to just tell you yes I think you should do this, your plan is flawless? Why ask for advice if you're not interested in hearing it?

I am interested in hearing advice. You all make great points about dropping volunteer commitments perhaps if employed, chance of not being employed by hospital and having to consider nursing home, employers hiring someone for only the summers chances, and possibly indulging in another volunteer commitment all things I never though or considered.

You guys think paid hospital transporter would count as clinical experience/exposure? Also what about paid care attendant?

Seems like overkill unless you have a compelling reason to do the volunteer committments
If accepted for internship or job I will talk to the volunteer coordinators and let them know and see what we work out! Minimum it's like only a 4 hour volunteer shift!

If that's the committemwnt it'sthen I'm sure it won't matter. Go for it !!

If you see the patients and speak to them, that's clinical. if you are in the basement assembling packages of sterile instruments (does anyone do that anymore? isn't everything a disposable packet these days?) you will not be seeing the patients or engaging with them in any way and that would not be the sort of clinical experience that will impress an adcom.

Don't be so sure that having a parent who is an attending is going to help get your foot in the door. Some hospitals might want to avoid an appearance of nepotism. They might want to hire someone who is going to stay for more than a few months, someone who is looking for a gap year position or hoping to gain a year or two of experience before going to a PA program.

First time applying for internships and paid jobs so no idea on how long it takes to hear back and etc but I guess that all varies based on where one is applying.
