I'm a Sophmore at a college in upstate NY and I had a burning question. How do you live in medical school/make money? Pay rent, bills etc. I can't believe there are no posts on this one lol. Oh, and if you do work where? Theoretically everyone has a bachelors in something soo maybe a part time lab job? Or do you take out loans to pay rent etc?

Very, very few people work. I've heard of nurses, paramedics or PAs in medical school maybe picking up a shift every week, and I've heard of tutoring a few hours here and there, but most people don't work at all. You can get a LOT of loans for medical school.

There are lots and lots of posts on this. Do a search lol.

You take out loans to cover COL in addition to tuition.

You take out loans for the full cost of attendance. COA is everything from tuition and fees to room and board. Very few people work.

I know some medical schools offer lab positions for students the summer after M1, but morning hit the nail right on the head...stick with loans. You'll be so busy with school that adding work on top of that will only cause more headache. Working during undergrad, however, is a great way to get relevant experience in medicine and build a solid application in the process.

Okay, I see. So where/how do you live? Rent a house? How rough is "living" as a medical student?

Most people take out loans for tuition, costs of supplies, and cost of living (so basically everything the spend comes from loan money). How "rough" it is, depends on how much money you take out and spend. Some people have parents or other family members that can pay for all or part, lowering their debt when they graduate.

Some med schools have subsidized apartments. Others have apartment style dorms. You can share an apartment with fellow med students to save money. Life as a med student is not much rougher (economically) than in college.

Do not work during med school! Just don’t do it! It is not worth it.

Loans, loans and more loans. Why do you think a lot of medical students are $100,000+ in debt by the time they're done? It's expensive to be alive...

Btw, there's a finance and financial aid forum. You'll probably get better results searching there instead of in the pre-allo forum.

And many (most) have neither. You borrow money and use some of it for rent. You will see in med school that you won't have the kind of free time necessary to hold down much of a job. Best to go to med school and see what's what before contemplating working, because most find it unrealistic, and even those that do probably not earning enough to make the trade off of study and "decompression" time worth it.
