Do most people who become general dentists start working right after dental school or do they do a 1 year GPR? Can I expect to get a job as a general dentist somewhere straight out of dental school? Also let's say I choose to work in a not too populated area, such as some more suburban areas of the Midwest, can I expect to make around 130,000 if I get a job straight out of dental school?

According to natmatch.com, 1700 dental graduates matched to some kind of dental residency in 2014 (GPR, Peds, Endo, etc). Of those, about 650 were GPRs... However, there are a number of GPRs and Endo and Perio residencies that do not participate in match. My estimate would be that there are around 2200 people per year getting into dental residencies (OMS internships, programs not participating in match, dual-degree options, spots that were post-matched, etc).. I think we have around 5500 dental graduates / year... So I guess a bit less than half of dental graduates go into a residency, and about half will work as general dentists their first year out?
